MUN Insider: The Press

The Press Team is the small, indefatigable
team that churns conference issues while
delegates saunter about in your free break
time. Being a part of the press team is almost
the same as camping: flexibility in your procedures hard work in your endeavors and food
on your table.
Heres what the presss all about
1. We have the power! Press is POWERFUL
thanks to the press, there is a written evidence
of the nearly all the moments of MUN! Press
papers also record your burning and
owning statements and the impact you make. Our paparazzi team captures the committee in
action and, gets its own perks from delegates who crave for Facebook Profile pictures. Also the
added bellowing of embarrassing shots are definitely fun to experience.
2. You are not tied to a chair in a room. In the press, you can go from committee to committee,
room to room, and explore the various issues presented in MUN! You can go behind the scenes
and interview Guest Speakers or specific delegates. You are not restricted to only one issue or
room or debate. Press gives you the chance to be present all around MUN.
3. Flexibility. Reporters, observes research, and write until 12 oclock. After ones work is over,
you pitch in and help out another team. Photographers are assigned what they do best; taking
pictures and they meander around doing what they love. The atmosphere is of brainstorming,
conceptualizing and idea-churning, filled with Eureka! moments. Lastly, the scope for versatility is immense, youre not just a photographer, and youre also a bit of a layout designer; not just
a reporter but also a bit of a debater. Press brings out and hones your hidden skills, hop in for
some self-discovery!
4. Professional Experience Deadlines, organization, laptops and meetings give you the ultimate
experience. If your goal is to be in advertising, public relations, graphic design, creative design,
broadcasting, photography and journalism this is your niche! Not just that, the satisfaction of
seeing your work materialize the next day feels just like the bonus check from the boss!
5. Propaganda and still more. What we write is what people read and believe. The power of the
printed cannot be underestimates. Join the press team and control the readers minds! *Evil
laugh* Moreover, our printed issues also stand out on college resumes!

Opening Ceremony: The day of truth...

tural , ethnic and religious barriers collapsed and an
introspective ambiance reigned the General Assembly as the National Anthem played. The room and its
consolidated delegates were subconsciously electrified as rapt young leaders
Due credit should be given to secretaries who were
always in close proximity for any impromptu assistance while photographers were sauntering and waddling to get the best angles.
With everyone being buffed and polished, zipped
in swanky attires and buttoned into tuxedos, their
poised strides, timorous glances and confident
demeanor, the opening ceremony kicked off triumphantly before the eyes of a speculative and impetuous audience.

In the midst of all this professionalism and competence, however, there was a blotch; missing delegates! Should we call it irresponsibility towards their
delegations, countries or Model United Nations itself? We can only hope that the remaining delegates
maintain their strong composure and carry on with
determination.

The chatters died down as the Secretary General

Speeches

The moment of truth has finally come for the MUNNERS: they were apprehensive,
yet passionate and enthusiastic for Zonal MUN conference 2016. We wholeheartedly
hoped that our efforts bore its fruits. Our credo can be summed up into three words:
teamwork, inquisitiveness and leadership. Day one definitely seems to be the prologue for a stimulating conference.
Mrs Bhurtun, project coordinator of Zone 4, delivered a pertinent speech on the raison d'tre of the zonal MUN conference. She stated that MUN would be an enriching experience.MUN is a golden opportunity for future leaders to show their charisma, decision making and conflict resolution skills.
A role model for MUNNERS, Secretary-General: Mathieu Chan Chee, struck the
key note of the conference: the need to work hand in hand for the betterment of the
world and to save humanity from hell.
Dr. A. Poonyth Seewooram, UN coordination analyst laid
emphasis on the values of the MUN and the need for
young people to understand and reflect on world affairs.
All speeches share a common ideology...the essence and
motto of Zonal MUN conference 2016: Handing down a
safer planet to coming generations.

Country Statement
up yielding the chair which
resulted in giggles amongst
the audience, easing the
stressful atmosphere that was
reigning at that specific time.

Following the drawing of lots by the

Secretary General, delegates from
Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt and
France ensued with the reading of
their respective country statement.
The atmosphere was tense with anticipation as delegates were nervous but
yet excited. The chairpersons then
attributed the right of reply to the
house. An unexpected funny incident
came up when the delegate of Algeria
who wanted to yield the floor, ended

During the break, prior to the

reading of other country statements, some delegates were
interviewed and they voiced
their feelings and shared their
experiences. At the beginning of
this D-Day, they were optimistic
about the Zonal MUN Conference.
Practically all the country statements
echoed and reflected the same soul
stirring message: the urgent need to
pledge our present and future by
working hand in hand to save our
beautiful planet. Libya, for instance,
extended its support to the UN in its
fight against terrorism while Uruguay
reiterated its commitment towards
the goals of the UN for a better tomorrow. Iran expressed concern about

migrant trafficking whereas Hungary stated that it had become a

victim of migration. Cuba expressed its willingness to eradicate
the Zika virus. Iraq said it would
cooperate with the UN and that it
is determined to improve its diplomatic ties with other countries.
Though delegates of Mozambique
and Nigeria amongst others were
warned because they exceeded
their time limit, they still maintained their composure and poise.

makes you think you are equipped to be in this particular commission?
Answer: Well, I am an Economics student and passionate
about the Economy of not only Mauritius but other countries as well.
How did you find the Merging Session?
Answer: It was really interesting as I met a lot of people
and got to socialise and made friends.
Are you comfortable about the idea of debating in
front of all the other delegates?
Answer: *smiling*. Well I am not usually shy but it might
be a little bit intimidating at first but hopefully everything will go on smoothly.
Do you feel that MUN might help you in the future
or even now?
Answer: Of course. Being a delegate involves a degree of
responsibility which will help me when I am at the university or even working. It also makes you learn about
other countries and predicaments they are facing and this
will increase my general knowledge widely.

SECURITY COUNCIL DEBATE

Delegates are allotted a specific country to research about

to discuss as full-fledged Diplomats. They have to support
and find required solutions for the countries that they are
representing.

Security Council debates are supposed to

be the most serious
and important aspects
of the United Nations
as only the Heads of
State preside over
them.

What does MUN mean to them?

The delegates of China view this competition as an opportunity to debate. The delegates of Tunisia had another
opinion about the MUN. They view the MUN as an opportunity to meet new people and interact with their new
friends.
How did they find todays session?
The various delegates that were interviewed throughout the day found it quite
challenging and stressful as they had tough opponents.
Did they think that they had represented their countries well? Did they have any
regrets about their presentation?
The delegates that represented China thought that if the Chairperson had given
every delegate the chance to talk it would have been better. They were satisfied
with their arguments but still wished they had done a better work. The Tunisian
representatives, however, had no regrets and appreciated their country statement.
Describing their MUN experience in one word.
The delegates from China and Tunisia described their experience as being challenging.

However, this year,

the delegates seemed
less prepared than
usual, both in protocol and in content of debates. The delegates raised
their placards more for points of
order rather than for content or discussion purposes, and rarely addressed each other through the
Chair. Even the discussion about
chemical weapons distributed to
Syria by the China seemed to interest Spain more than anyone else. All
under the hawk-like gaze of the
strict and disciple-loving members
of the Jury who mark each and every word and move.
