thosewebsitestogainanunderstandingonwhatitmeanstobeabloggerandhowtheycanuse
thatenvironmenttoexpresstheirthoughtsandopinionsinbothapublicandprivateforum.

Introduction:
Thislessonwillbeginwithmeaskingthestudentsabouttheirweeksincewelastmet.Iwillthen
askthestudenttobrieflydiscusswithmeaboutwhatwedidlastweekastogagetheir
understandingandabilitytorecalldetailsabouttheintroductionofthetext,Monster,whichwe
willbeworkingwithduringthisunit.(5Minutes)
Development:
1. SSR(20min)
StudentswillbegintheclassperiodbyhavingSilentSustainedReadingfor20
minutes.Duringthistime,studentswillbeaskedtoreadthefirst30pagesofthetext
thereasoningforthisissothattheyareabletogetanunderstandingofhowthe
bookiswrittenaswellasreadtheintroductiontoSteveHarmonslife.Asstudents
arereading,Iwillhavethefollowingquestionsprojectedforthemtothinkabout:

2. BloggingforaPurpose(30min)
Beforewebegin,IwillgooverabriefPPTforthestudentsonwhatbloggingisand
howitcanbebeneficialintheclassroom.Wewillseeafewexamplesofblogs,both
professionalandpersonal.
Next,aswebegintoworkwiththetext,itisimportanttonotethatoneofthethemes
thatwewilldiscussinthistextistheimportanceinknowingandunderstandinghow
ourlifedecisionscanaffectourlivesbothpositivelyandnegatively.Studentswill
workonunderstandinghowtheirdecisionscanaltertheirlifeplans.Todothis,we
willworkwithblogs.StudentswilleachhaveaniPadorlaptopinwhichtheywill
haveaccesstobloggingsites(primarilyEduBlog.com).Duringthisindependent
researchtimestudentswillbeworkonidentifying3differentarticlesthathavea
similarthemeorconnectiontoMonster.Samplethemesare:

Asstudentsarereadingtheirblogs,theywillbeaskedtocompletetheBloggingfora
Purposeactivitysheet,whichwillbeusedlaterintheunit.Oncestudentshavecompleted
theirownresearch,theywillmoveintothecreativewritingphase.
3. Creativewriting(30min)(ApplemanTexttoself)
Thecreativewritingphasewillconsistofstudentscreatingtheirownsmallblog.
StudentswillcreateaccountsonBlogger.comandtheywilltaketheirworksheetthey
haveusedtoanswerquestionsabouttheblogstheyhaveresearchedandusethatsheet
againtowritearesponsetooneoftheblogstheyhaveresearched.Theirblogsshould
consistofwhattheyagreedanddisagreedwithfromtheblog.Also,studentswill
needtoconnecttheirbloggingtothebookthinkingabouthowtheblogtheyfound
relatestoSteveHarmoninMonster.Thisneedstobeoriginalcontentwrittenbythe
students.

Studentswillcompleteatickettoleave.Theywillbeaskedtosummarizeonethingthat
theyagreedordisagreedwithintheirblogaswellaswriteaboutwhattheyfoundtobemost
difficultandwhattheyenjoyedmostaboutthisassignment.Itisimportanttogagestudents

broadbandreceiversothatshewillhaveaccesstoInternetifshedoesnotcometoschool.This
wayshecanhaveaccesstotheworkthatshemissessinceweareina(mostly)technologydriven
school.Kaylaisprovidedwithalaptopthroughschoolandwiththetemporarybroadbandaccess
shewillbeabletocompletetheworkinclass,butifneedbe,shecandoitathometoo.Since
todaysactivitiesrequireacomputershewillhavethataccess.
