Procedure:

Before class:

Make sure computer and smartboard work

Print off fact family worksheets
Sign in to BrainPop Jr, so it's already done.
Have students who are finished their lunch, quietly read on the carpet, while people who
have after lunch jobs do their jobs.

Introduction: 5 min

Have students quietly put their books away and come sit at their desk.
Ask students what two numbers add together to make ten, wait until most of them have
their hand up.
Ask a student sitting quietly for their answer, explaining that you are picking them because
of how quietly they are sitting.
Ask a few more students, questioning if there is more than one way to make ten

Body: 50 min

Activity 1: 15 min

Explain that we are going to see how Annie and Moby make ten, and they should pay
close attention, so they can answer the quiz questions afterward.
Show Making Ten video from BrainPop Jr. (almost 6 minutes), making sure its on closed
captioning, then full screen, to keep them more engaged.
Walk around, ensuring students are paying attention.
Do BrainPop quizzes following the video, picking students sitting quietly to answer,
exclaiming that they are being picked because of how quietly they are sitting.

Activity 2: 10 min

Tell students you want to see how well they can make ten, and explain you are going to
show them numbers in a ten frame on the smartboard, and when they know how many to
add to make ten, they should stand up quietly, and hold up that many fingers. The side
that has someone stand up first, with the correct answer gets a point. The side with the
most points when it's time to go to music, wins that game. We'll keep track of who wins the
games, and we'll play every time we have math, until the family day/teacher convention
break, and whichever side of the room has won the most games, will get a prize.
Start off with an example, to check for understanding, then ask if anyone has any
questions.
Play until music, changing from ten frames to dots if engagement is waning.

Lining up: tell students to try to line up by birthday, starting with January, as quietly as they
can, once lined up, explain that they need to walk, quietly, and keep all their body parts to
themselves, while they walk to music; so they don't interrupt any other classes.

Coming back into class: greet students at the door, and tell them to go to the carpet and sit
in a circle, quietly.

Activity 3: 20 min

Remind students about the Sweet 16 game Mrs. Van Roon taught them, and tell them that
when they are finished their work, they will come to the carpet and play a math card game.
Explain that instead of Sweet 16, I want them to try to play Sweet 10. Demonstrate a game
of Sweet 10, to remind them how to play.
Explain that they can also play a game I made up called Go Fish for Ten, thats just like
regular go fish, but instead of trying to make pairs, youre trying to make 10.
Demonstrate Go Fish for Ten
Explain that now that students have practiced making tens, they will do the two pages in
their math book titled ways to make ten (hold up page), and explain that they should be
working quietly, trying to do it themselves.
Dismiss paper passer to pass out math books, dismiss students who behaved best on the
carpet, followed by those who are currently sitting quietly, to their desks.

Activity 3: 10 min

Hold up page again, to make sure students know what page they should be on.
Do the first one together, to check for understanding.
Have students complete both pages as you walk around checking answers and making
sure students stay on task.
As students finish, sticker their pages, and remind them to quietly play Sweet 10 or Go
Fish for Ten on the carpet.

Closing: 5 min

Remind students that they have minutes left to finish their two pages before recess, and
allow students who are playing Sweet 10 and Go Fish for Ten to clean up and get ready
for recess. As students leave for recess, give them a high ten (instead of high five) for
learning about making tens.
