My Philosophy of Education

My philosophy of education derives from my passion and respect for

teaching. At this stage in my life, my goal is to teach young adults and
assist them in fulfilling their goals. I will support the collaborative approach
to encourage team working skills while also respecting individual learning
styles. I will acknowledge my willingness to learn from my students and
implement opportunities for learners to contribute in class. My classroom
environment will be an activity based learning style instigating and
facilitating group discussion while attempting to optimize student learning. I
will engage my learners by assessing early and often to validate their efforts.
This assessment intervention will also allow me to reassess any teaching
lessons if need be. Respect and empathy are attributes I prioritize and
demonstrate professionally as well as upholding the same high level of
expectations from my students. I will adhere to the Duty to Accommodate
provision with learners challenged with special learning needs requiring
specific accommodations for student potential and success. In my teaching
role, I see myself as a facilitator, an explorer, and co-learner as well as a
coach.

I believe the classroom environment should be safe, friendly and fun.

The atmosphere should be student centered with activity learning based
components such as field trips, games, guest speakers, and group activities.
I will construct an environment to enable the students to feel comfortable to
share with others. It is my belief that the role of the teacher is to establish
a safe setting in the classroom on the first day. I will clearly inform the
students that I am approachable and supportive with their learning needs.
I will generate class discussion with active listening, boundaries and mutual
respect of others. Within the classroom, I will model these expectations with

the goal that the students will benefit in strengthening their communication
skills in order to build relationships. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to
model this desired behavior whereas the student is responsible for their own
conduct.

I believe students should have some input of what they learn. As a

teacher, I will provide opportunities for the students to explore and create
activities to encourage student engagement. I will encourage students to
share prior knowledge in the subject area and provide immediate feedback.
Lesson plans will be long-term, broadly structured outcomes with thematic
units and integrated curriculum. I will engage learners supporting all unique
learning styles and inclusive needs utilizing assistive technology and KT
movement breaks. I will check with the students often to ensure lessons are
understood and if not, will offer one on one time to provide support and
guidance. I also believe in supporting incidental teaching within the
classroom enabling the students to be more accountable and generate more
ownership for their learning.

I prioritize building a rapport with the learners early as a facilitator.

Along with clearly defined outcomes, I will encourage students to construct
their own meaning and develop personal understanding from our class
lessons. As an instructor, I will prefer more ongoing formative assessment
than summative assessment. I believe in grading for effort as well as
achievement because I feel the real learning is in the process and not the
end result. I will implement more self and peer assessments and will
provide efficient feedback for the students.
Be the person you would like your learners to be!
