Damon Speeches Started In 1872 Still Continues Today

By Amber Nomura 22
and Kira Sakai 22
The annual Damon Speech began in 1872 by
Reverend Samuel Damon honor his son, William F.
Damon. It is held annually in March for 7th and 8th
Graders.
The speeches started as a way for students to share
poetry and favorite verses from literature aloud. Public
speaking is an important part of the Punahou education
and the Damon Speeches exemplify that.
All students in the 7th and 8th grade participate in
the Damon Speeches as part of their English curriculum.
Many students feels anxious about preparing for the
speeches which they perform in front of their classmates.
I practiced in front of a timer and our teacher made
us practice in front of small groups. The teacher made
girls practice in front of girls and boys practice in front of
other boys so we can be more comfortable, commented
Kaelyn Sakai 20.
A Damon Speech topic is chosen based on a
students interest and it should appeal to a broader

audience. Topics can be a current event or a

controversial issue.
It is easier to go through with your speech if you
pick a topic you like that leads to a more passionate
speech said Hannah Humphreys 20.
Students are graded for presentation, which is poise,
body control, gestures, eye contact, energy and a voice
which is speaking clearly and expressively.
Students begin their speech with a strong opening
thesis statement. This statement must support the
argument of their topic.
A speech that consists of good supportive details to
support an argument is essential.
A memorable
conclusion is also
important in the
speech.
It must consist of
at least 5 paragraphs.
Your speech should be
from 3-4 minutes long,
said Kaelyn Sakai 20.

Mr. Tom Earle, 7th Grade English teacher and

Damon Speech organizer, reflects on past Damon
Speech winners saying, they are poised and articulate,
and their speeches frequently deal with unique topics
that capture the attention of audience members. They

have learned to add drama to their presentations

through varying their volume, emphasizing certain
words for theatrical effect, pausing between words,
and employing gestures.
Keep eye contact with your audience, try not to
stutter because that could bring your score down, Trent
Nomura 20 commented.
It takes a month to prepare for the Damon
Speeches. The much anticipated finals are on March
10th for 7th Grade and March 11th for 8th Grade.
When the day of your speech arrives it may seem
nerve-racking, but once you complete your speech you
feel accomplished and relieved, commented Hannah
Humphreys 20.
My Damon Speech is about how awareness of food
allergies and labeling of products with certain allergens
(stuff like peanuts, eggs, dairy, etc.) should be improved
because illnesses can be prevented, lives can be saved,
etc. I chose this topic because I have food allergies and
people should know about food allergies because they
are becoming more and more common, commented
Lauren Chock 20.
My Damon Speech topic is about organized youth
sports programs and how they are so severe in the
pressure to succeed that leads to physical and
emotional injury. I chose this topic because I am a

The Damon Speeches are an pivotal part of the
Middle School experience at Punahou. It continues to
shape young adults into future orators who speak
passionately about different causes.
Public speaking has a long and storied history at
Punahou, and the Damon Speech contest is a living
expression of that tradition. As Punahou celebrates its
175 year, it is important to realize that the origin of the
Damon Speech Contest extends back to 1872,

How to Plan A Slumber Party

By Brooke 22 and Namele 22

One of the best thing to do over the Winter Break is

a slumber party. How how do you throw a slumber
party?
Invitations: You'll have to be careful in inviting
people. You can't invite everyone, but try not to let
people who aren't invited know about the sleepover, and
make sure that everyone who you invite will make your
other guests feel
comfortable. You
can invite someone
via email or e-card,
or actually send a
tangible card to
them. It's fun
decorating cards
yourself, but you
could design them
on the computer
and print them.
Activities: A
common slumber
party conflict is
finding something to
do. You could chalk
your hair, paint
nails, or curl your
hair . If you dont
have much planned,
thats fine, because according to our poll results, twothirds of girls think that just talking is the most fun thing
to do. Old fashioned stuff like charades or board
games can work, too.
Food:
Having good
food is really
important. In
the poll we
sent out, onethird of the
girls told us
that they
thought food
was the most
important
part of
sleepovers.

pretty finger
foods are were
the best, and one girl said that part of her dream
slumber party would be decorating cupcakes.

Themes: You can choose whether or not to have a

theme; slumber parties dont have to be super fancy. You
could have a campout in your backyard, with smores
and scary storytelling. You could also have a dance
party with a dance-off, or a cookie-decorating party
contest. The possibilities are endless. Whatever you do,
just make sure everyone is having a good time. Have fun
planning a slumber party.

Save and Spend

Shopping for nice things without spending too much

isnt always easy. Oh thats cute!, you might say. Also,
when shopping, it is so easy to find a reason to buy
something. The result of your recent shopping spree
might be shocking. Here are some ways that might just
cut that bill in half.
Start by saving. The first thing to do is hold back on
buying unnecessary items. Try to hold back on tiny things
that youll love for five minutes, then lose. Letting go of
these small purchases can will build up over time, and
can save you a lot.
Be a smart shopper. Dont pay full price for items.
Check your emails for sales, and coupons. Be
knowledgeable about the places you shop in.
I buy stuff on sale or go to stores that are having
sales, like Old Navy, Mrs. Scanlan, music teacher.
Check out discount stores like Ross, or Nordstrom
Rack or TJ Maxx which offer discounts on items. Most of
these items are last season, but they are discounted up to

75% of the original price.

I love to shop on sale. Everyone can pay full
price, but the smart person gets the bargains. said Mrs.
Mazzullo, Electives teacher.

#BlackLivesMatter

By Mattingly Morales 22
and Ashley Oh 22
Three African American women started
the #BlackLivesMatter movement on social
media in protest to the recent police brutality.
A 28 year old African American, Sandra
Bland was arrested after for failing to use her
turn signal. According to Huffington Post
News, Texas State Ranger Brian Encinia,
white male, arrested Bland on July 10,
2015, forcing her to the ground, repeating I
cant hear! after the officer pushed her to
the ground. She is heard crying and screaming
saying that the officers were hurting her, and officer

said in response, I will light you up! as he held a

stun gun. Three days after this incident, Bland was
found dead in a jail cell.
Photo from www.slate.com

Family members say it was unfathomable that she

had committed suicide. A grand jury later declined to
charge anyone at the jail related to
Blands death. Encinia is awaiting trial on
perjury, prolonging detention, and
violating general orders.
A 21 year old white man, Dylann Roof,
open fired on a church in Charleston,
South Carolina, according to CBS News.
Roof was charged with 9 counts of
murder and one count of possession of a
firearm.
Roof killed 9 African Americans
including the pastor. Roofs bail was set
at $1 million, and he was protected by a
bulletproof vest and authorities. The
aftermath included the legal protection of
the Confederate flag, the Governor of South Carolina,
Nikki Haley, getting involved. Barack Obama also
acknowledged the incident.
These incidents are the causes of
#BlackLivesMatter movement.
There is a specific problem that is
happening in the African-American
community thats not happening in
other communities. And that is a
legitimate issue that weve got to
address, commented President
Barack Obama 79.

Android users prefer a reliable and fun phone to use.

Samsung operates on the Android OS. Android allows

Iron Chef Competition in Japanese Class

On February 26th, 16 students in the Japanese class participated
in the annual Iron Chef, as inspired by the popular TV show. Toshihiko

Trimester 2 and to explore Japanese culture food, commented
Toshihiko Mori, Japanese teacher and Iron Chef Competition
organizer.
Students in the 8th grade prepared Japanese food to please the
judges. Desserts, meat, and other dishes were prepared for this
annual event. The dishes were judged points are based on
presentation, flavor and creativity.
Students participating in the event really enjoyed themselves while
preparing their food.

My favorite part of this event was being able to work as a team
omusubi with ginger karaage
to create (delicious) Japan-inspired dishes, exclaimed Taryn Kaneko

In the competition, 5 groups worked diligently to create Japanese
foods. Some of these foods include omusubi with chikuwa, soba,
matcha cake with green tea, Japanese poke, handmade mochi Ice
cream, omusubi with ginger karaage, ochazuke, and salmon sushi.
Students learned a lot from this experience. Michelle Tsui
comments I learned to work as a team and to always be prepared
for the worst.
My favorite part of the event was being able to see everyone
else's creations and learn about all the different Japanese dishes. It
was also really fun to also be able to have this competition with the
pressure of having to create a dish for the judges within a certain
amount of time, commented Kourtney Kwok.

thought the sobas flavor went nicely with the dessert and tea,
remarked a faculty judge.
Students and teacher enjoyed the Iron Chef competition. I

I learned that I am much better at making rice balls than I
thought and that I learned that cooking with a group makes the work
go much faster, commented Bert Kobayashi 20.
The Iron Chef Competition was a great way to connect curriculum
and fun. It was a popular event with students and they look forward
to holding more events like this one in the future.

we enjoyed eating the amazing food. I plan to hold the Iron Chef

Primary
In order to get on the Primary Ballot you need to
either have a grant from the Secretary of State from that
state, or get 1% of the voters from
or 500 signatures of the party that
you are running for in that state.
While trying to get on the Primary
Ballot, you also need to participate
in debates of your party. The
debates are normally hosted by
networks, so who appears is up to
them.

General Election

On November 8, 2016, the United will hold elections for

the 45th president. The inauguration will take place on
January 20, 2017. The United States election process is
complicated and involves many steps.

Meeting the Requirements

Candidates must meet requirements of the office. In
order to be president, a person must natural born citizen,
reside in the US for at least 14 years, and be over 34
years of age.
First Round: Entering Primary
The candidate files a Statement of Candidacy. This
file registers the candidate for office.

If you do end up winning the

Primary, the deciding general
election will be the next hurdle.
The general election is on the
Tuesday right after the first
Monday of November with 538
total electoral votes.
These votes come from the number
of senators, the number of
Members in the House of
Representatives, and three more votes from the District of
Columbia. These electoral votes are split among the fifty
states as the number of representatives and senators
combined. A minimum of 3 electoral votes is given to
each state. Electoral votes are calculated based on the
population of each state. So the states which are most
populous gets more electoral votes. For example,
California get 55 while Hawaii only gets 4 electoral
votes.
It is a winner take all competition. For example if a
candidate wins the majority of voters for the state even
by the slightest majority, all the electoral votes are
awarded to that candidate.
A president not winning the popular vote but winning
the electoral vote has happened in American history four
times.
The most recent example is in the Presidential Election
in 2000, GW Bush won 271 electoral votes, but lost the
popular vote by 540,000 to Al Gore.
The total number of electoral votes is 538, the
winning number of electoral votes is 270.
So, a person could get the majority of electoral votes,
and not have a majority of total votes. This is why you
hear the terms popular vote, for the majority vote votes
by a candidate, and the term president, for the winner of
electoral votes.

How Much Should I Pay For

a Pair of Black Leggings?
By Sydney Lezy 22 Evonne Lau 22
Two popular stores go head to
head, but which one is better?
Forever 21 or Ivivva?
Forever 21 has three stores on
Oahu while Ivivva has only one
store. Ivivva was founded in 2009
by Lululemon as a branch for active
girls. It only sells sportswear for
girls approximately ages 6-15 years
old. Forever 21 was founded in
1984 and has a much wider variety
of clothing, including casual wear,
swimwear, and activewear. The
company sells accessories, beauty
products, and clothing for women,
men, and girls. They also have
multiple branches, such as Love 21,
Heritage, and XXI Forever.
Ivivva is more expensive than other
brands, and their clothes are higher
quality. Most of Ivivva clothes are
made with special fabrics, such as
Luon or Luxtreme. Ivivva also
has in-store classes, such as yoga or
dance class. However, Ivivva color

Ivivva targets people who are
able to spend $50 or more on a pair
of Black Leggings. The quality is

love the prints and designs, said
Hallie Yamamura 22. However,
Ashley Oh 22 said I had
experienced pilling on my Ivivva

Forever 21 is more affordable

Classic Black Yoga Leggings from
Forever 21 costs $19.90, around the
average price of leggings. They are
made of nylon and spandex and
have a side and key pocket. All of
the eight reviews on forever21.com
are positive. They said that they

What was your least favorite subject in school? Why that

subject?
My least favorite subject is science. I didnt like science
because we didnt do any fun experiments. All we did
was learn from textbooks. It was really boring.
If you could choose anywhere in the world to visit where
would it be? Why?
I would want to go to England, Scotland, and Ireland
to visit where my heritage began. I would visit these
places to see what my grandparents did there.
What is your favorite movie of all time?
My favorite movie is My Cousin Vinny. I thought it
was very funny. Even though it had many bad words it
was a great movie.

10 Questions Mrs. Robles

By Kaito Yamanaka 22 and Kaistin Vasquez 22

Where did you go to college? What made you want to go
to that college?
I went to the University of Nebraska. I chose this school,
because my grandmother went there. She got a degree
in P.E. I thought this school was great.
Where is your favorite place in Punahou?
I like sitting at my own desk in the morning. I get in the
classroom and it is pitch black. I only turn the one lamp
on and I plan what I am going to do for the day.
At what point in your life did you want to become a
teacher?
I wanted to be a teacher in the 4th grade. My teacher
was awful and very mean. I wanted to be better and
nicer than she was.

If you could make a new law what law would make?

Why?
I would make a law that everyone in the world has to
obey. It would be kindness. Everyone would have to be
kind. This would basically solve all of our conflicts in the
world. Everyone would also have to be welcoming.
What do you do
in your free
time?
In my free
time, I like to
lie in the sun
and read.
What took you
to Hawaii?
My father
was a Marine
Two Star
General. He
was stationed
at Camp Smith
in Hawaii, so I
came with
him.

What is a fun fact about you?

A fun fact is that my father was a Two Star General and
that I like to dance hula.

Mrs.Robles is always seen smiling at her desk.
