You are on page 1of 8

This power point will show you some

examples of solving linear equations using

the properties you just viewed in the
lesson.
Equations with variables on both sides:

You will first want to gather the variables on one side and the
constants on the other side.

5x + 11 = 7x - 9

-5x -5x Subtract 5x from both sides

11 = 2x - 9

+9 +9 Add 9 to both sides

20 = 2x

10 = x Divide both sides by 2

6x – 10 = 2x + 6

ANSWER: X = 4
Here’s another example that involves more properties:

4(3x – 5) = -2(-x + 8) – 6x Use the distributive property

12x – 20 = 2x – 16 – 6x Combine Like Terms

12x – 20 = -4x - 16 Add 4x to both sides

+4x +4x

16x – 20 = -16
Add 20 to both sides
+20 = +20

16x = 4 Divide both sides by 16

X = 4/16 = 1/4
2(2x – 1) = 3(2x – 4) + 2x

ANSWER: X = -7
Equations with fractions:
you should “clear the fraction” as shown below:

1 1 1 First, find the common denominator

X X Multiply the ENTIRE equation by the
3 4 6
The common common denominator
Denominator
1 1 1
is 12! 12 X   X  
3 4 6
Distribute the common
denominator to EACH term
1 1 1 And multiply !
12  X  12   12  X  12 
3 4 6

4x + 3 = 12x - 2 Subtract 4x from both sides

3 = 8x - 2 Add 2 to both sides

5 = 8x Divide by 8

5/8 = x
Here’s another example!

2 1 2
x  x2 Find the common denominator
5 3 15

2 1 2 
15 x    2 Multiply ENTIRE equation by the
5 3 15 x 
common denominator

2 1 2
15  x  15   15  x  15  2
5 3 15
Multiply EACH term by the
common denominator

6x – 5 = 2x - 30
Subtract 2x from both sides
4x - 5 = - 30
Add 5 to both sides

4x = - 25 Divide both sides by 4

X = -25/4
3 1 5
x2 x
4 2 4
