AEROGEL

REMARKABLE AEROGEL PROPERTIES:

Amazing insulator: Aerogel is best insulator ever
produced. It has remarkable thermal insulative
properties, having an extremely low thermal
conductivity: from 0.03 W/mK down to 0.004
W/mK.

Lowest solid density: The lightest man-made

material is aerogel with density only three times

density of air. However industrial aero gels can be
made denser, up to 0.6g/cc or more.

Highest porosity: Perhaps the only material

that can have over 95% porosity, and a very
wide pore size distribution, ranging from
Angstroms (10-10 meter) to microns (10-6
meter).
Very high surface area: For some Aerogels,
one ounce can have a surface area equal to
a football field (over 3000 square meters per
one gram).

MANUFACTURING OF AEROGEL

SUPERCRITICAL DRYING PRINCIPLE

By increasing the pressure and temperature the

liquid is brought to supercritical fluid state.

The pressure is dropped so that the liquid inside

the aerogel is gasified and removed , avoiding

damage to the delicate three-dimensional network.

APPLICATIONS OF AEROGELS

THERMAL INSULATION
Aerogel is becoming more

and more popular as a

material choice for insulation
in many applications, from
houses and commercial
buildings to oil pipelines and
space probes. Aerogel
insulation is said to provide
about 40 times the insulation
provided by fibre glass, which
allows its use in spacerestricted scenarios, and even
in insulating glass panels

SPACE APPLICATIONS

AEROGEL CAN ALSO BE USED FOR

Making bombproof houses and

military armour
Absorbing water pollutants
Absorbing oil spills
Carrying drugs and medicines.
Constructing supercapacitors

Other applications
adsorbents,
catalysts,
semiconductors,
piezoelectric,
dielectric,
ferroelectric,
diffusion controllers,
electric conductors,
electric insulators,
and optical features.
