ZEUS
Zeus
Zeus was considered to be the supreme ruler
of the gods and people in Greek Mythology
He was referred to as the God of the Universe
Zeus was thought of as the god that punished
the bad and rewarded the good
Zeus is very similar to the Roman god Jupiter
Zeus’s symbols are the eagle, oak tree, royal
scepter, and the thunder bolt
Family Tree
The father of Zeus is the god Cronus and his mother is the
goddess Rhea
Zeus’s 2 brothers were Poseidon (god of the sea) and
Hades (god of the underworld)
Zeus’s 3 sisters were the goddesses Demeter, Hera, and
Hestia
Zeus married his sister Hera and she became Queen of the
Olympians
Zeus had 8 children with different goddesses and mortals,
his children are Ares, Hephaestus, Apollo, Dionysus,
Hermes, Artemis, Athena, and the half god Hercules
The Story of Demeter
Another story that Zeus was in was the story of Demeter (god
of agriculture). This story is the explanation of the changing
of the seasons. After Persephone, daughter of Demeter, is
abducted by Hades and taken back to the underworld,
Demeter becomes extremely upset and leaves Mt. Olympus
to punish the Earth for her daughters abduction. While
Demeter was on earth, everything was cold, no agriculture
was living. Finally, Zeus grew tired of this and sent Hermes
to retrieve Persephone from Hades, who convinced
Persephone to eat 6 pomegranate seeds before she left
which forced her to go back to the underworld with him
after every half of a year. This explains how when
Persephone is with Demeter, all is flourishing in the
seasons of spring and summer, but when she goes back
down to the underworld, Demeter grows lonely which
causes the seasons of autumn and winter to occur.
