2014 BRAINS CHEMISTRY BOARDS REVIEW

Inorganic Chemistry
Exam 1
Topics: Thermodynamics and Chemical Equilibrium
I. A. Given the following Ho formation of:

C6H12(l) = -156.4 kJ/mol

C6H12(g) = -123.4 kJ/mol
CO2(g) = -393.5 kJ/mol
H2O(l) = -285.8 kJ/mol

Draw an energy diagram for the combustion of cyclohexane as determined using Hess
Law.
B. For the redox dissolution of Ag metal in concentrated nitric acid to yield silver ions and
NO gas, (Eo of the half cells: Ag+/Ag = +0.80v. NO3-, H+/NO)
1. Write the balanced redox equation for the dissolution of Ag in concentrated nitric
acid.
2. Give the standard cell notation using the redox equation in #1. Label completely
including the direction of electron flow, the polarity and identity of each electrode
and the direction of cation and anion migration.
3. Give the effect (increase, decrease, no effect) of the following conditions on the cell
potential:
A. Add KI crystals to the anode cell.
B. Dilute the cathode cell solution.
C. Place the galvanic cell under the sun (T = 32 oC)
D. Use a larger-sized anode.
E. Increase the volume of the anode solution.
II. Problems. Show solutions clearly. Express your answers with the correct number of
significant figures.
The change in standard enthalpy of the galvanic cell in I.B. is +66.32 kJ of heat. What is the
entropy change of the surrounding? Of the system? Is this enough to justify the spontaneity
of the redox process? Show proof for your answer.
100 mL of 0.05M copper(II)sulfate solution is electrolyzed between inert electrodes passing
a 6.0 ampere current for 7.0 minutes.
A. Write the electrode reactions.
B. How many mL of oxygen gas are collected at the anode?
C. What is the pH of the solution after electrolysis?
