only have 28 more days of second grade! This week we have been learning about and reading myths. We have talked about different cultures and how those cultures create stories that explain how something came to be. We have been focusing on using our text to locate answers to questions, summarizing, and identifying the theme of a story. Next week we will read My Light, The Power of Water , and Pedal Power. These stories are expository text that will teach us about electricity and power. We will continue to learn about and use adjectives to enhance our writing. We will also learn about onomatopoeia and continue to practice using articles correctly. We will continue to write in our journal everyday, and focus on using details and strengthening our stories. We will have our reading story, vocabulary, and our grammar test on Thursday. Next week in spelling, we will be reviewing CVCe syllable words. Our spelling words will be: state, replace, nine, ninety, side, sidewalk, face, outside, these, tadpole, complete, alone, beside, people, and cousins . Our spelling test and sentence dictation test will be on Thursday.
Our tested vocabulary words next
week are: electricity, energy, flows, haul, power, silent, solar, and underground. It is important that your child be able to read these words, know what they mean, and use them in a sentence. During our read aloud, we will continue reading The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid. Ask your child what is happening in the story. We will continue to practicing using standard and non-standard units of measurement. We will practice estimating and measuring objects to the nearest inch. We will still utilize our classroom store and banking system. Children will continue to make deposits and purchase items each week. We will continue to practice basic addition and subtraction fact fluency as well as regrouping. Our classroom caterpillars have arrived! We will be observing them over the next few weeks as they develop through the stages of their life cycle. We will keep track of their growth and development on a calendar and will also be writing our observations down in our science journals. Please ask your child about their caterpillar and butterfly observations!
