This task is designed for students to understand how they could map out a process (often complex) in practice. Although there will be some minor differences, most students achieve something like the following map. This process map gives a good indication of exactly what each stage does and it uses symbols to denote what each activity contains (storage, operation, or inspection). Moreover, it gives a good indication of the flow of claims through the process, most importantly identifying the recycling activity that loads the first four stages (as identified in this process map) with an extra 100 claims per week to process. The map also identifies the current capacity (in terms of number of people) of each stage. Notice how many store triangle symbols there are. Each of these is an accumulation of applications. Whenever applications wait in one of these, it is slowing their progress through the process.
