Lesson Plan

Student: Yvette M. Ferrer

Professor: Professor Esposito

Course: EDU 521

Date: April 7th, 2016

Grade: 5

Content Area: Science

Topic: Density
Instructional Objectives
After showing and discussing the PowerPoint slides on Density, students will be able to describe
what density entails and how an objects mass with its volume is compared by utilizing the
formula for density. Next, students will perform a scientific method activity which involves
observing and asking questions, forming a hypothesis, conducting the experiment and drawing a
conclusion.
CCLS/+NYS Standards and indicators
Mathematic (NYS) Standard #1: Measurement & Data
Students will measure and estimate liquids volumes and masses of objects using
standards units of grams (g), kilograms (kg0, and liters (1). Add, subtract, multiply, or
divide to solve one-step word problem involving masses or volumes that are given in the
same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as beaker with a measurement scale) to
represent the problem.
Indicators
o This will be evident through the science experiment students will be able to
demonstrate knowledge by being able to measure and find the mass and volume
utilizing the density formula.
Motivator
Students will watch a brief video on density and how different properties have different densities.

Experiment

24 8.5 x 11 scientific method activity sheet

24 pencils
6 cups of syrup
6 cups of milk
6 cups of dish wash soap
6 cups of water
6 cups of oil
6 cups of rubbing alcohol
6 16 ounce cups
6 spoons
Strategies

Direct instructions: Teacher will guide the students through the lectures on density.
Do Now: Students will be provided two copies of a word cloud. I will ask students to pick out 6
words from the word cloud and 6 definitions from the separate word cloud and match them on a
separate piece of paper. This will help students identify key terms related to Matter as well as
refresh their memory from the previous three lessons.
Group Discussion: Students will be paired into four and perform a science activity in which
they will discuss the four steps they took to conclude their experiment.
Read Aloud: Students will present their findings by reading aloud their scientific method
activity sheet to the rest of the class.
Adaptations

A copy of the PowerPoint slides will be distributed to students who are visual learners
and who have difficulty taking notes.
The link to the introduction video will be provided to the students.
Extra time will be provided for students who need it.
Differentiation Instructions

Level 1: Students will provide a description on the different densities of the six properties
provided in the science experiment by explaining the different textures of each property in a
separate piece of paper.
Level 2: Students will provide in sequential order specific details on the steps they took in order
to obtain their results.

Level 3: Students will describe what occurred in the experiment that either enforced their
hypothesis which they formed in the beginning of the experiment or changed by providing a well
written conclusion utilizing the academic language learned in the lesson.
Developmental Procedures
1. Students will conclude a Do-Now, where they will provide definitions for the words
they have learned in the previous lessons.
2. The class will view a video on density and come up with questions. Why do some
properties sink and others float? Why do some properties mix together?
3. Students will observe and listen to the lecture provided by the teacher in which examples
will be given that will compare the objects mass with its volume by utilizing the density
formula.
4. After the lecture students will break up into groups of four and work together on a six
density tower layer science experiment in which they will utilize a scientific method
activity sheet.
5. Finally, students will present their findings by reading aloud their scientific method
activity sheet to the rest of the class.
Assessment
Students will complete a quiz at the end of this unit which will entail questions on matter,
states of matter, chemical and physical changes, properties of mass and volume as well as
density.
Independent Practice
As a review on todays lesson I will provide the students with a homework worksheet
which will have questions on the lesson they have learned today. Furthermore, they will
be able to utilize the PowerPoint slides which I provided them with during the lesson.
Follow Up: Direct Teacher Intervention
Students who perform poorly on the quiz at the end of this unit will have to attend a
review session which will be held after school to review what they have difficulty
understanding.
Follow Up: Academic Enrichment
Students will search on the computer for one video that demonstrates a science
experiment that compares different objects densities and then write about what they
observed in the video.
