Teaching Portfolio Rationales

Part I: Describe a teaching artifact that represents the overall HTSB Standard
HTSB Overall Standard
Standard #4: Content Knowledge

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools

of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) s/he
teaches and creates learning experiences that make
these aspects of the discipline accessible and
meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the
content.
Teaching Artifact

Debrief Bad Resume Exercise

Course
Teaching Artifact Description

295A
Students write what their group found to be the bad
issues with the Bad Resume example. Each team posted
their responses on the board.
Teaching Artifact Results
During the debrief, students were able to see that many
of the students had the same ideas on what was good and
what was not.
Part II: Connect the teaching artifact to sub-standard and assess your proficiency
Sub Standard
Does Candidate draw upon his/her initial

knowledge of common misconceptions in

the content area, use available resources
to address them, and consult with
colleagues on how to anticipate learners
need for explanations and experiences
that create accurate understanding in the
content area? (4.2)
Connection to Artifact

Sharing each teams discovery allowed them to come to

their own conclusion of what they want to watch for
when constructing their resume. They were able to
identify the misconception that the resume gets the job.
They were able to articulate that the resume could only
get them the interview.

Self-Assessment
4-Candidate ALWAYS does this as a teacher.

Combs 2016 |

3-Candidate MOSTLY does this as a teacher

2-Candidate SOMETIMES does this as a teacher
1-Candidate RARELY/NEVER does this as a teacher
NA-Candidate did not have the opportunity to do this

Evidence of Self-Assessment

In reviewing all the teams responses to the issue with

the bad resume, I could see that the teams all had
virtually the same responses, which showed a good
understanding of the concepts.
Part III: Improve your proficiency for the HTSB Standard
Sub Standard to Improve
Does Candidate use multiple

representations and explanations that

capture key ideas in the discipline, guide
learners through learning progressions,
and promote each learners achievement
of content standards? (4.3)
What to Improve?

In future lessons, I would allow more time to explore the

parts of the resume. I would do more checking for
understanding and incorporating more guided practice.
In this lesson, I believe we moved to independent
practice a bit prematurely.

Research at least 2 resources on how to improve

proficiency.

In my discussion with my mentor, we discussed the

need to provide more guided practice time.

High School
I had a discussion on this issue with Dr. Combs. She
has taught for over 25 years. She recommended
using worksheets where students could enter
information on their own and the peer review each
others work to spend more time with the concepts.
She guarded against moving on too soon.

School

Implementation of Findings

The next time I teach the lesson, I would have an

additional resume for students to look at. I would have
them independently (but guided) decide what was good
and what wasnt. This would allow me to make sure the
individual students understand the concepts.
