PRIORITIES OF THE PETERSON 2016 SLATE

1. Negotiate a contract for teachers that ensures that there will be input/transparency in the

negotiation process and includes a compensation package that does not exclude teachers

planning to retire.
2. Ensure union democracy through a member driven union thatrepresents the voice of all
members.

3. Cultivate a relationship with DCPS management; adhere to pre-established bi-weekly monthly

meeting schedule with the Chancellors management team.
4. Bridge the gap of old school teachers and new school teachers and embrace all teachers

whether traditionally certified, teaching fellows, or TFA so that teachers can work together to

support and mentor one another.
5.

Provide transparency and accountability; all actions, WTU elections and finances will be
open to all members for inspection and open to public debate and discussion within the
membership.Aggressively seek open governance in the Washington Teachers Union. Explore
the need for a forensic audit with the Executive Board to rule out financial malfeasance.

6. Effective plus campaign- Ensure that each teacher receives an Effective evaluation or higher

by hiring WTU Teacher Center Coordinators, providing extensive job embedded PD on the

Teaching & Learning Framework (TLF) and ensuring that the three teacher centers are fully

operational and funded by DCPS as outlined in Article 2 of the WTU Collective Bargaining
Agreement.
7. Ensure that new teacher mentoring program is developed by the Chancellor & WTU

President as part of the Full and Equal Partnership Committee as outlined in Article 2 of the

WTU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
8. Fully staff WTU Field Services. Field staff openings should give consideration to qualified rank

and file WTU members.
9. Ensure that the twelve union committees are fully operational and chaired by Executive Board

members as required in the WTU Constitution and By laws.
10.

Develop partnerships among parents, teachers, education councils, clergy, community,

students and labor organizations to jointly fight for high quality education and optimal teaching
& learning conditions in all of our wards and give voice in wards. where our less resourced
schools have become social experiments.
