OBSSESIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD)

A. INTRO:
a. Obsession: Repetitive, intrusive thoughts,
image or phobia that are against the will of the
patient.
b. Compulsion: Repetitive action done in response
to obsessive thoughts to relieve tension

B. INCIDENCE:
a. Prevalence: 0.2 -2%
b. Age: <20-25 yrs
c. Sex: F>M
d. Suicidal rate is high

C. ETIOLOGY:
a. Serotonin
b. Genetics
c. Operant conditioning
d. Stress

D. C/F:
a. Repeating the action without any reason or will
to do so
b. Anxiety
c. Patient is aware of the problem and wants help

E. D/D:
a. Schizophrenia: 15% of Schizophrenia have OCD
b. Delusional beliefs
c. Normal checking

F. RX:
a. Congnitive behavior therapy
b. Systematic desensitization
c. Drugs:
i. Clomipramine
ii. Fluoxabin

G. PROGNOSIS:
a. Relapse is high
b. Often becomes a chronic condition
