it affects the environment. The students completed notes on the chapter
including important information from the text.
Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:
4-ESS3-2 Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of
natural Earth processes on humans.
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students will come up with an idea of how we
can clean up oil spills in the ocean, including an explanation why they chose
that method and correct punctuation and grammar with 100% accuracy.
Materials Needed:
-

Water
Cork
Sponge
Paper Towel
Vegetable Oil
Eye Dropper
Science: A Closer Look

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

The students are always very eager to answer questions. There are times
when the students blurt out their answer without giving others a chance to
answer the question. There is a variety of disabilities in the classroom

causing the students to need altered tests and some content. The students
really enjoy doing hands on activities, such as labs.

A. The Lesson
1. Introduction (7 minutes)
All the materials will be sitting in the front of the room for the
students to pick up at the start of class.
Yesterday, we talked about pollution and how it affects our
environment. Can anyone tell me what pollution is?
Can anyone give me an example of what they see as
pollution? What about an oil spill?
Today, there was an oil spill in the fourth grade classroom.
Animals are getting caught in it and it is contaminating the
ocean. It is your job to find a way to get the oil out of the
ocean.
2. Content Delivery (20 minutes)
a. You are given a sponge, a cork, an eye dropper and a paper
towel. Follow the directions given in the book to conduct the
experiment. When you are finished, you will complete
questions 6, 7, and 8. I will draw sticks to find your group.
b. I will draw sticks so the students are in groups of 4. There will
be 5 groups conducting the experiment.
c. The students will follow the directions in the book to conduct
the experiment. The students will have to go to the bathroom
to get water. They will place 5 drops of vegetable oil on the
top of the water. The students will then have to try different
ways to get the oil out of the water using the sponge, paper
towel, eye dropper and cork. The students will develop a
hypothesis and list their results after conducting their
experiment.
d. I will walk around the room to help students if needed and to
make sure all students are participating in the activity.
3. Closure (3 minutes)
a. What were some ways that the groups attempted to get the
oil out of the water? Did any of them work?
b. Do you think using these techniques would work in the
ocean?
B. Assessments Used
a. Formative assessment will be used to assess the students ability
to develop a hypothesis and conduct an experiment.
C. Differentiated Instruction

a. For ELL students, the directions can be illustrated using pictures

to show the student what steps they must take and when.
D. Back Pocket Idea
a. If the students complete the activity early, they can try different
methods to suck up all of the oil.
