Parents you should know

In High school the parent, student and IEP team decide route according to student needs, assessments,
self-determination and interest inventories. The transition team should be working to align student vision
with requirements that are needed for success after high school. (See attached self-determination
assessment and tips)

Certificate of Completion
The Certificate of Completion is awarded to a student with special needs who completes the public
education program as described in their Individual Education Program (IEP). Students individual plans
for completion are designed and agreed upon by their local IEP team.
Post-High Options with a Local District Certification of Completion
If you receive a local district certification of completion rather than a high school diploma, you
may be eligible for these options:

Work with district transition coordinator, community agencies and IEP team to explore posthigh school options for education, employment, and community living services
Attend a post high school program
Continue to receive supports and services through an IEP until aging out of eligibility or
education and transition goals are achieved
Receive an vocational assessment through Michigan Rehabilitation Services, (MRS) or ARC
Receive supports or services through Macomb Community Mental Health, (MCMH)
Meet enrollment requirements to attend Macomb Community College Certificate Programs
Live independently without formal supports

This may lead to a broad spectrum of post-secondary education training and options. These options
may include:

University
Community College
Trade School (sheet metal, electrical, heating and cooling etc.)
Competitive employment (full time job)
Community Agency Provided Adult and Daily Living Services/ Supported Employment
(workshop placement, etc.)

High School Diploma


The High School Diploma is awarded to a student with special needs who are able to complete
grade level core work from the Michigan Merit Curriculum.
Options from High School Diploma
Further education from a Community College or University:

Macomb Community College, Wayne State University, Western University, etc.

Training or immediate employment in:


-

Trade School
Competitive workforce

If the student is choosing the university or college


placement they must contact the Special Services
Department of a college or University to inquire
about accommodations and services. The student
then, self-advocates for classroom assistance to
support their future education performance. The
Support Services center will provide student
enrolled with proper documentation describing
disability and accommodations for the delivery to
course instructor.

All programs listed provide further education


training and independent living skills both in the
school and community setting. Each program
provides different activities and services to
support their specified curriculum. Enrollment is
unique to each school. Contact must be made to
your local high school special education
department for begin the referral process.
The transition from school to the community
continues in these settings by linking the student
to CMH/MRS and other supportive agencies (if
already not in place).
These programs (CMH and MRS) are used to
enhance the vocational and independent living
skills needed to support successful post school
outcomes.
