Subject: Energy: Lesson 6- Sports and Collisions

I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson? (What do you want to accomplish?)
Energy is not created. It can be transferred from one form to the next.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
Using balls, bats and racquets, the students will work to see how collisions can transfer energy from one
object to another.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to
applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the
name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies. (Students will be able to and this ties to ____ standard.)
I can make predictions about how one object will affect another when they collide.
o 4-PS3-3: Ask questions and predict outcomes about the changes in energy that occur when
objects collide.

I can use my observations from the sporting equipment experiment to explain how energy is
transferred and how it affects that items energy.
o 4-PS3-2: Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place
to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.

o I can make a prediction

when 2 objects collide.

o Using observations, I can
then explain the transfer of
energy.
Today we will be using this
recycling bin, puffball, and
badminton racket to help us learn
about collisions.
Our main goal from this is to look
to see what happens to the
energy when these 2 objects
collide. Before we get to the
demonstration though, I need
everyone to look at number one of
their paper; this question is asking
you to predict what you think will
happen when the puffball hits the
racket. Take 2 minutes to write
down your prediction.
I want 3 people to raise their
hands to share their predictions.
Now, in order to reach this goal, I
am going to select someone, who
I know has been paying attention,
to help me do a demonstration for
the class. I need hands for those

be watching what happens to the

Now, everyone take 6 minutes to
draw your picture and answer
numbers 3 and 4. Make sure to
use full sentences! When you are
done, wait patiently and quietly
for the rest of the class to finish.
Who would like to share some of
their findings with the class?
Thank you for sharing all of your
awesome findings!
Lets apply what we now know. I
want to make this tennis ball into
the bin but I keep hitting it past it,
I dont understand why I cant get
it in the bin. What would your
suggestions be for me?
Now, everyone quietly work on
the last question on the paper.
When you are done, sit quietly in
your seat and wait for further
instructions.
Have we completed the I can
statements from the beginning of
the lesson?
Move onto the KWL and review
each part of it in preparation for
the test later.

When two objects collide, the

energy from the first object gets
transferred to the second object.

Your reflection on the lesson including ideas for improvement for next time:

Name: ______________________________________
Puffball and Racket Experiment

1. Predict: Make a prediction of what you think will happen when the puffball is hit with
the racket.

2. Test & Observe: Draw a picture of what did happen when the racket was used to hit
the puffball.

3. Explanation: Using the words potential energy and kinetic energy, describe what
you think happened. How was energy transferred?

4. Hypothesis/Prediction: Using words, describe what you think will happen if the
puffball is hit very lightly with the racket. Is the result different from what would happen
if the puffball were hit hard with the racket?

5. Conclusion: Summarize your findings about energy when two objects collide. Your
summary should include the following words: kinetic energy, potential energy, and
transfer of energy.

6. Self-Assessment: Circle where you feel you are in being able to do the following I
can statements.
1: Beginning
2: Developing
3: Secure

I can make a prediction about changes in energy when 2 objects

collide.

Using observations, I can then explain the transfer of energy.
