How do know if something has

changed?
Change is a transformation from one
phase to another. For example a
person changes from a child to an
adult.

How do you know if something has

evolved?
Evolution is the change in a populations
inherited traits from one generation to
another. The change in population of a
species over time.
Biological evolution: the change over
time of living organisms

How the Earths

surface has
changed.
Earthquakes
Volcanoes
Erosion
Glaciers and Ice
Ages
Meteor Impacts

How animals have

changed.
Extinction
Adaptation
Competition and
migration.

Theory: An explanation that ties together

many hypotheses and observations.

Evolution. Why does it matter now?

Species: the most specific classification of

living things
Example for humans and dogs :
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
class: Mammalia
order: Primata
family: Hominidae
Genus: Homo
Species: sapiens

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Canidae
Genus: Canis
Species: C. lupus
Subspecies: C. l. familiaris

Speciation: the process of natural selection

producing a new species out of existing
species over thousands or millions of
years.

Adaptation: a trait that increases the

chances that an organism will survive and
reproduce
Mutation: a random change to a gene that
results in a new trait

Artificial selection: the breeding of plants

and animals with desired traits to attempt
to produce off spring with these same
traits.
Natural selection: survival of the fittest
organisms that are the best adapted to
their environment and the ones that will
live long enough to reproduce and pass
on their favorable adaptations

Extinction: The evolutionary termination of

a species caused by the failure to
reproduce and the death of all remaining
members of the species; the natural
failure to adapt to environmental change.
