CLIENT BASED PROJECT

The Future Technical Communicators of the University of Central Florida and the
Orlando Central Florida chapter of the Society for Technical Communication works
together to create a mentorship program between professionals and students. While
currently the mentorship program is gaining momentum, the need for a brochure describing
the communities it represented, the program itself, and the benefits to be gained was evident.
I worked with Dan Voss, the co-moderator of the mentorship program to create the
brochure.
The overarching design of the brochure creates a level of formality while still
incorporating bright colors, perfect for a partnership between students and professionals.
The serif Georgia font was chosen to remain professional, but not look overly formal. While
the original draft of the brochure only included black and gold, the final design of the
brochure now incorporates both the UCF black and gold as well as the FTC logo colors.
The front of the brochure includes the title and both the primary logos and region
specific logos for the organizations. Using both the main logos and the logos for the specific
group insinuate the connection to a national organization while still representing the local
chapter.
As the reader opens the front cover, the panel on the left explains what FTC and
STC are. While members of FTC and STC will already know the basic information, this
brochure is intended for not just technical communication students, but also English majors
and students in similar programs. Placing this information in the first panel introduces the
participants of the mentorship program. While the first draft of the brochure included a
picture and a quote on the inside flap, it was decided that the audience would benefit more
from including information explaining the mentorship program on this flap instead. Both
the interior left panel and inside flap include information that is essential for any students
wishing to join either organization or the mentorship program. Likewise, these two panels
incorporate the use of bulleted lists and key points in a different style (italics and font color
change) in order to break down information that is easier for the reader to see.
Once the brochure is fully opened, the reader has access to not only information
regarding how to start, how to join, and where to find more information, but also
testimonies from three different people who have a part in the mentorship program. Giving
the reader exact quotes from a mentor, mentee and a professor speak to the importance of
the program.

This project went through multiple stages of content edits, in which Dan Voss
personally gave feedback along the way. Most of these edits were the placement of photos,
quotes and sections of text. The finished product was submitted to Dan Voss on March 14,
2016 for a final approval, to which he suggested that it would be a superb recruiting tool
for FTC and STC. Working on this project allowed me to not only improve my knowledge
of the newest version of Microsoft Publisher, but it also provided a more realistic view of
what a potential project might be post-graduation.
