Lesson Title: Adding in Sometimes I Feel Happy

Lesson Goal: Develop a greater self-awareness.
Standard:
ELE: Social and Emotional Development 1. Early Learning Expectation:
Children develop and exhibit a healthy sense of self.
Lesson Objective:
Given a model and explanation of emotional vocabulary, subtends will be
able to sing song, follow gestures, and/or express times when they feel happy, sad, curious, mad,
silly, and surprised.
Content:
Use emotion meter to show what your face looks like during each emotion and
talk about situations when you would feel:
Happy
Sad
Curious
Mad
Silly
Surprised

Lesson Procedure:
Transition into the Lesson: Lights are shut off to signify clean-up time to end morning
mathematics. Students to clean-up work areas and transition to rug for meeting time.

Anticipatory Set:
Have stuffed animals lined up by white board. After children are seated
and ready to start, pull name stick, ask student to pick up a stuffed animal, and have him/her tell
you what is special about that animal. Allow three to four students to pick an animal and share
the special qualities. Have each student place animal in the box afterwards to ensure that a
different animal is picked every time. [Questions, Silence, Paraphrase Reflection, Do-It
Statements] Our feelings separate us from animals and make us special. Using the emotion
bulletin board, clarify the emotions to the students. Using the remaining name sticks, ask
students to pull emotion pictures out of the lunch bag and explain each picture. Add clarification
when necessary. [Tell, Inform, Explain, Question, Silence, Paraphrase Reflection, Guided
Practice]
Steps of Lesson:
We are going to learn a new song now. I am going to sing the song for
you, then we are all going to sing it together once, and then we are going to end by singing the
song two more times with the movements. [Tell, explain, inform]
