HIV/AIDS

HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, when successfully infected a person can lower his
immunity level against diseases. A person who has AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome is considerably a very dangerous threat, considering the fact that he/she can
deliberately spread the virus and cause numerous deaths. HIV or AIDS has no known cures but,
if HIV is suspected earlier, the person may undergo treatment in order to delay AIDS, although
there isnt much guarantee that the infected host will be cured.

HIV and AIDS can be acquired from blood, semen, injections, breast feeding and organ
transplants from someone who has been infected. Heterosexual intercourse has the highest
percentile rate that caused AIDS in the Philippines. Majority of the HIV carriers are the OFWs.
The remaining percentile acquired HIV from paid/unpaid sex, mother-to-child transmission and
contaminated products.

The Philippines may be considered as a low HIV incidence country but, it is alarming because of
the increasing number of infections in our country. AIDS is a very serious illness because there
arent any cures yet; more or less we do not give any attention or care how this might lead to a
major health issue.
Philippines may be known for the morality of its citizens but, it is a noticeable fact that many
Filipinos especially teenagers heterosexual or homosexual are now sexually active. Because of
sex this virus can be widely spread even if it is only from 2 persons. Engaging in pre-marital sex
isnt really the main problem but the knowledge about the virus is the causes an increase of
infected people. Piercing and tattoos has been a trend among teenagers nowadays and they arent
even aware about the risks and factors that they might get that can lead to HIV.
There arent any other treatments for HIV/AIDS besides effective sexuality education. Therefore
majority members from our group decided to engage in health education because awareness,
when successfully taught, can be as effective or may be even better than a medicine.
