JKIA handled 522,180 passengers in February 2016. This was a growth of about 12.6%
when compared to the figure recorded same month in 2015. In the same month, aircraft
movements improved by 13.3% to 8,483. The amount of cargo handled however dropped
by about 6.0% to 20,401.8 tons in the period under review.
Sector-wise, all international routes apart from North Africa registered increases in
traffic, which could have been, in part, explained by the leap-year phenomenon. The
biggest gainers in terms of sector performances were Middle and Far East, East and
Central Africa, West and Southern Africa as well as Indian Ocean Islands. The main
carriers operating at JKIA and MIA carried significantly higher number of passengers as
well did increased frequencies in the month under review. In this regard, British Airways,
Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates were strong performers.
The domestic sector saw an improvement in traffic on the JKIA-Mombasa, JKIAKisumu, Nairobi-Eldoret and JKIA-Malindi sectors, mainly on account of operations of
Jambo Jet and Fly540 COM.
The improvement in the number of aircraft movements in the domestic sector was also
supported by higher test/training flights at both Wilson and Malindi Airports.
Cargo traffic during the month under review declined marginally mainly as a result of
lower international imports as well as domestic throughput.
JKIA registered 3.9% and 3.8% growth in passenger and aircraft movements respectively
but a drop of about 1.8% in cargo movements in the first eight months of the year ending
February 2016 when compared to the traffic handled same period last year.
