ASSESSMENT, PLANNING AND INSTRUCTION


Mr. Da Costa effectively uses ideas to interest students and to plan a lesson that engages students. He has
used a variety of instructional methods, and has had his students work as a whole class, in small groups, and
individually effectively. Mr. Da Costa effectively used technology in his lesson delivery which elevated
student engagement and understanding. He has readily accepted teacher feedback on any improvements
needed to more efficiently implement his ideas. Mr. Da Costa is encouraged to continue to reflect on the
effectiveness of his instruction and lessons and to plan on ways to make his classes run smoothly and
efficiently.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Mr. Da Costa has a calm and caring manner which allows him to be flexible and adapt to a variety of
situations with ease. He has built a rapport with the students in an atmosphere of mutual respect and has
shown consistency and firmness when dealing with this age group. Mr. Da Costa has developed techniques to
effectively manage the classroom, such as: varying voice level as necessary, using proximity, body language,
and facial expressions. By experimenting with different groupings and lesson styles, Mr. Da Costa has
learned that most behaviour is managed by keeping students meaningfully engaged throughout the day. He is
learning to develop a presence with his students that commands respect from his class.
UNDERSTANDING CURRICULUM AND THE LEARNER
Mr. Da Costa demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Curriculum. His knowledge of
subject content was demonstrated with excellence. He participated in the delivery of the grade 8 math, health,
dance, and physical education program. Mr. Da Costa used appropriate curriculum guides and additional
resources to enhance his knowledge of the subject area and expectations. His planning illustrated sensitive
attention to individual needs, learning styles, abilities, and exceptionalities. In all of his lessons, he
demonstrated the ability to organize, experiment, be creative, and reflect on the validity of the structure and
outcome of the lessons.
DIVERSITY AND EQUITY
Mr. Da Costa created an atmosphere of mutual respect and caring. He worked with students displaying a wide
range of abilities. He planned his program to ensure the success of every student at his or her level. Mr. Da
Costa was able to include all the children in his lessons and was attentive to those who occasionally lost their
focus. He built on the existing structures and format of the classroom to maintain a comfortable learning
environment for all. Being culturally responsive was also a priority of Mr. Da Costa's. He ensured that the
examples used in his lessons reflected the lived experiences of his students. It was obvious that Mr. Da Costa
appreciated the unique and interesting qualities of each child.

PROFESSIONALISM
Mr. Da Costa presented a professional manner at all times within the classroom and school environment. He
shows flexibility, adaptability, and initiative, as he willingly accepts advice and shares his ideas and learning
experiences with other teachers. Mr. Da Costa was able to adapt readily to changes in scheduling, often with
little notice. He actively participated in reflective practices, critically assessing his teaching and setting goals
for future endeavors.
INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL / COMMUNITY LIFE
Mr. Da Costa has shown great flexibility and the ability to work with others. He worked with other teachers
when asked to assist with a skating field trip. He showed leadership by running a resume writing workshop
for our grade 8 career day. He also participated in the staff student versus teacher basketball game after
school. Mr. Da Costa was open and willing to participate in school life and was always willing to work with
other teachers and flexible to a variety of situations.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
It has been a great pleasure having Mr. Da Costa in our classroom. He was a great asset in terms of improving
the student's learning and the classroom environment. Mr. Da Costa is an organized, creative, sensitive,
knowledgeable, and dedicated professional who will be an asset to any school. The students and I will miss
his many contributions to the school. I wish him continued success in his future teaching endeavours, he has a
long and successful teaching career ahead of him.
