Reading Objectives:
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
Survey a 3 or more paragraph text for graphics and main divisions to predict content
Skim for the main idea
Scan introduction and conclusion to confirm the main point
Scan the text for general and specific information
Use contextual clues to guess the meaning of new vocabulary
Answer questions about facts in the text
Begin to make inferences to aid in comprehension
Identify the authors purpose and audience
Summarize short sheltered magazine or newspaper articles
Writing Objectives:
At the end of the course, students will be able to write an essay in 60 minutes which:
has correct basic essay structure
contains an introductory paragraph with stated main idea
contains 1-2 body paragraphs with supporting details and examples
contains a concluding paragraph
has correct simple, compound, and some complex sentence structures
Attendance
Students are expected to attend ALL classes in order to improve their English and meet their
student visa requirements. Students who fall below 80% total attendance for the semester are
eligible for dismissal from the ALI. For additional information on our attendance policy, please
speak with your advisor or the Student Services office.
Cannot base grades on attendance.
Participation:
Students will be graded on their participation throughout the course. Active participation means
arriving on time to class, being prepared with necessary books and materials, and positively
contributing to class discussion, small-group activities, and in-class exercises in English!
Tests & Quizzes:
The course will consist of two reading tests, two writing tests, a reading final, and a writing
final.

No make-up tests will be allowed due to the short nature of the program.

Homework:
Students will complete 6-8 graded assignments (including reading and writing)
Students are expected to practice reading outside of class. Students will write weekly
summaries of articles they read on the Extensive Reading Blog.
Homework is due at the beginning of class when the teacher collects it. After the beginning of
class, its late and will only receive half credit. If the late homework is not submitted at the
beginning of the next class, it will not be accepted.

Writing Tests: 25%
Reading Tests: 25%
Reading Final: 10%
Writing Final: 10%
Reading and Writing Assignments: 10%
Extensive Reading Blog Entries: 10%
Participation: 10%

A+ 97 100
A 93 96
A- 90 92

B+ 87 89

F 0-59

Note: In order to pass this class, students must receive a 70% or above.
Date of Final Exam:
The writing final exam will be on Monday, May 2, 2016
The reading final exam will be on Wednesday, May 4, 2016

Statement of Plagiarism:
Whenever you use the words or ideas of others, you have an obligation to quote and credit those sources. Any of the following
acts can be classified as plagiarism: failing to provide citations for borrowed information, failing to enclose the borrowed words
of another in quotation marks, and failing to render summaries or paraphrases into language varied enough from the original
without citations.
One or more of the following actions are available to the teacher if a student has cheated or plagiarized on any work done for
class:
Levels of reprimand/action:
1 Reviewno action
2 The student receives an oral reprimand
3 The student is required to re-do the work
4 The student receives a score of 0 on the work
5 The student receives a failing final grade in the class
6 The student may be expelled from the ALI

Cheating/Plagiarizing during a Final Exam:


If a student is caught cheating and/or plagiarizing during a Final Exam, the student will automatically fail that class.
