1. The artifacts displayed under Standard 5 were collected as an assignment in GEDU 549
Career Development and Assessment in the Schools. This fits within the GC section of the
National Model.
Competencies addressed:
1: Assist students in the assessment of their individual strengths, weaknesses, and differences,
including those that relate to academic achievement and future plans.
2: Apply knowledge of career assessment and career choice programs.

2. What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies which
fall under this standard?
I believe that the artifacts shown here demonstrate my ability to build a unit of lesson plans
around the topic of career development, in accordance in Standard 5. Many of these plans
include exploration of various career and educational choices, based on student preferences. This
follows competency 5:1 as students are assessing personal strengths and weaknesses in regards
to future plans. Likewise, students will become more knowledgeable as to what it takes to
study/work in certain field.
Following competency 5:2, students will reflect on what education and training is needed in
accordance to their future plans. This also includes becoming familiar with what courses will be
required and what a typical college course syllabus may look like.

3. What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your personal
goals and your growth as a professional school counselor?

I believe that these items tell me that I am progressing as a professional school counselor as I am
able to implement a specific unit of lesson plans around a set standard. I feel as though students
will be able to gain a better personal understanding of college/career goals, which is the overall
purpose of Standard 5.

4. What are your plans for additional growth or improvement in this area?
To further growth in this standard, I would like to implement the use of more resources for the
students. This would include speakers and workshops within various career fields, as well as
possible field trips. Likewise, I would like to follow students occupational/educational
placement and use this information to assist future students.
Providing a network with other counselors and outside resources would be very beneficial within
Standard 5. Students should be able to explore potential future options hands on before making
any decisions. Any outreach/educational opportunities would be quite advantageous.
