IinterviewedafamilyfriendnamedNancyJohnsonwhohasseveralgrandchildren.She
isamazedbyhowtherehasbeenagreatchangeinwomensrightsduringherlife.Growingup,
mostwomenstayedhomeandwereexpectedtocook,clean,andtakecareofthechildren.The
manwasinchargeofearningmoneyandwasseenasthedominantpersoninthemarriage.
Nancytoldmehowinequalitymadeherparentsmarriageextremelydifficultbecausehermom
wantedtojointheLDSchurch,butherhusbanddidnotwantto.Inthattimethemanmadeall
thedecisions,buthedecidedtolethergoifsheneversaidawordaboutittoherchildren.She

anyofhersiblingsmisbehaved,theentirefamilysreputationwasatstake.Shealsofoundit
strangethatshewasexpectedtodochoresandthengoplayoutsidewithhersiblingsforseveral
hourswithnoadultsupervisionashermomdidhousework.Onceshewasanadult,sheasked
hermomwhyshewasntconcernedaboutlettingherchildrenrunaroundbythemselvesandshe
repliedthatshehadneverthoughtaboutit.Intheirculture,itwasperfectlynormal.
WhenNancywantedtogotocollege,herdadtoldhershecouldonlybeanurse,teacher,
orsecretary.Ifshewantedtoattendmorethanoneyearofcollege,shewouldhavetopayforit
herself.NancywasunhappywithherdadsideasanddecidedtojointheLDSchurchlikeher
momandeventuallymovetoUtahtoattendBrighamYoungUniversity.Ontopofthat,shewas
oneofonlytwopoliticalsciencemajorsinherclass.Manymenthoughtshewasaradical
feministandshewasputonlists,whichshedidntelaborateon.
Shedescribedhowduringhertimeincollegetherewasamajorrevolutionincivilrights
andwomenwereabletohavemorerights.Womenduringhermotherstimehadsuchlittle
education,whichmeanttheycouldneverhavetheoptiontoleavetheirhusbands.Whiledivorce
isntalwaysapositivething,whenwomendonothavetheoptionavailableitallowsforabuse
andinequalityinamarriage.Althoughexpertsclaimtheincreaseindivorcesisdueto
weakeningofthesocialnormsthatdefinepeoplesbehaviorinasocialinstitution,Idont
thinkweakeningistheappropriateword(Strong&Cohen,2014,p.272).Socialnormsare
changing,whichisagoodthingbecauseitisallowingwomentogetoutofbadsituationsand
preventingthemfromhappening.Iamgratefulforthecivilrightsmovementbecauseithas
createdtheopportunityforwomenandchildrentogainmorerightsandrespect.Withoutit,
parentingwouldnotbethesameasitistodayandspouseswouldnotbeequal.
