NETS-T Self Assessment

August 28, 2014

I took the NETS-T Survey and here is my self assessment regarding my practice, skills
and knowledge measure up against the NETS-Teacher standards.
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology
to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in
both face-to-face and virtual environments.
BASIC: I used both top-down and bottom-up methodologies for teaching adult
students who are learning Mandarin Chinese and English, depending whether the
intended goal of the target students is academic performance or proficiency
performance. I also tried to design task-based or gamification methodology in my
past teaching experience so the students could be more engaged and interested in the
leaning or problem-solving process.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and
assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content
learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the
NETSS for students.
BASIC: I used Smartboard, internet portals like Youtube or Global Language Online
Support System (GLOSS) as effective tools to assist me in teaching students learning
Mandarin Chinese and English.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an
innovative professional in a global and digital society.
BASIC: I try to reach this goal by improving my knowledge and polishing my skills
of teaching through the master program in curriculum and instruction at KSU.
4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an
evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional
practices.
BASIC: As a Foreign Service Officer for 12 years who loves engaging with people
from different backgrounds and cultures, I do have knowledge on certain global
societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and
ethical behavior in their professional practices.
5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning,

and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and
demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
BASIC: I try to reach this goal by improving my knowledge and polishing my skills
of teaching through the master program in curriculum and instruction at KSU.
I consider myself as a moderate user of technology, although maintaining connection
to internet has become a premise of almost everything in my daily life. It is important to
emphasize that technology can be a useful tool for and thus should be integrated into
modern education. However, technology evolves and transforms swiftly. The purpose of
education is to achieve the intended goals set before teaching/learning process started
through well-designed curriculum and instruction lesson plan. Educators should be able
to first identify the goals and potential challenges while planning the curriculum, then
choose certain types of technology which best meet the requirements of certain type of
education or teaching/learning process. Therefore, knowing how to design and improve
effective curriculum and instruction/lesson plan, with the proper help of ever changing
technology, would play a major role in my quest to become a better educator.
