Materials Needed: Word map with animals on it,


Chart with characteristics of animals, paper, pencil,
and the book- Rumble in the Jungle by Giles Andreae
and published by Scholastic Inc. in New York, NY in
1996.

Unit Title: Rumble in the Jungle


Lesson Title: Characteristics of zoo animals
Length of Class period: 30 minutes

Student Objective(s): THE STUDENT WILL be able to identify different types of zoo animals and their
characteristics.
Bell Ringer: Ask students to name their favorite zoo animal.
Focus Activity: Ask students How many of you have seen your favorite zoo animal? Do you know how many
animals are in the jungle? Answer-More than half of the total animal species on the planet are found in a jungle
which makes it nearly impossible to make a list of jungle animals. We could make a list but it would be almost
complete because several species out there are yet to be discovered or classified.

Introduce the book.


Read the book aloud.
Discuss the different animals and
their characteristics read about in
the book.
4. Go into the activity where
students will match the
characteristics to the right zoo
animal. Teacher will do the first
three zoo animals with then class.
5. Students will complete the last 10
zoo animals on their own and the
teacher will assist if help is
needed.

Students will be ask questions as the


teacher reads the book to see if
students are understanding what is
being read. In activity, students will
practice using the word mats to match
characteristics of zoo animals to the
zoo animal name and picture.

While the teacher is


reading the book, students
will be asked questions to
check for understanding.
Students will be shown
pictures of animals so
students can state what the
name of the zoo animals
is and its characteristics.

Independent Activity: After the teacher goes through the first three animals, Students will complete the last 10
animals on their own by matching the characteristics to the right zoo animal.

Teacher will ask students to state the


characteristics of an animal the teacher
calls out. The teacher will end the lesion
by asking the students to think about their
favorite animal and what are some
characteristics of their favorite animal.

Grade the 10 animals and their characteristics the students completed


by themselves.
