Instructional Context
What do I know about my students that will inform this lesson?

anything about Pearl Harbor and others have family members that have told them
about that day.
How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?
- Not currently applicable
How do I expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons?
I intend to build on this lesson by having books offered in our class library about

Introduction: Today we are going to continue our

discussion about Pearl Harbor. Yesterday we
learned about what happened on December 7th,
1941 and today we are going to learn about
some of the people who were affected by this
tragedy. I know that sometimes we have family
members or friends who know someone that was
alive during this time or have stories to tell
about this day. Do any of you have a family
member, maybe a great grandpa or someone
who might have been alive when Pearl Harbor
was attacked?
(ENGAGE)

The purpose of this introduction is

lesson to prior knowledge of the t
meant to help connect the topic a
life and family members and also
idea of perspectives.

Have a couple students share if they have any

stories to tell or know of anyone who was alive
then/affected by Pearl Harbor.
Today we are going to read this beautiful story
called, Voices of Pearl Harbor by Sherry Garland.
I bought this book when I was in Hawaii and got
to visit Pearl Harbor. This story is going to teach
us about many different perspectives from
different people. Before we start reading I want
you to turn and talk to your shoulder partner and
talk to them about the word perspectives. What
do you think perspectives might mean?
(EXPLAIN-ENGAGE)
Have a couple groups share (EVALUATION)

Begin Reading story

Stop on page 1- (think aloud-modeling) I notice
that this man looks very sad in this picture. We
read that he is a native islander which I know
means that he has lived in Hawaii for a long
time. I can tell from his perspective that he is
sad to see his island attacked and the animals of
his homeland being affected. (EXPLAIN)

The purpose of this part of the les

thinking aloud about the people in
model how to take on different pe
purpose of this is to also give the
opportunities to connect with the
about the text and also have an e
on perspectives of other individua

your eyes. I want you to take a minute and in

your minds I want you to pretend that you are
this young boy and that you were out riding your
bike when you heard the planes and saw the
smoke and the loud booms as the torpedo hit
and you might even see the sailors trying to
swim to shore. If you get scared you can open
your eyes. Now I would like you to turn and talk
to your shoulder partner. Talk to them about how
this might have looked or the sounds that this
boy might have heard. I also want you to discuss
what this boy would have been feeling. What
would you do if you were that boy? (Elaborate,
Explain, Explore, Engage)
Have a few groups share
5-10 mins

Today I want you to think about the many

different perspectives we learned about in our
story from the native born islander, the
volunteer for Red cross, the widow, etc. After you
think of all the different people who were
affected, I want you to choose a perspective that
you are going to research and write about. Once
you have chosen the person/perspective I want
you to come and tell me so I can write it down.
You will then be able to read the pages I printed
from the books on your person and use the other
texts in our room about Pearl Harbor and even
the computer. You will gather research about this
person and what they might have felt. After you
have gathered all of your information and
research, we will put that together so you can
write a journal entry from your persons
perspective. It will look similar to the experts
from our reading. Today we are not doing any
writing. Your goal for today is to choose the
perspective you want to take and begin the
research process. (EXPLAIN)

Accommodations
Accommodation Strategy/ies
For students who might need additional support they will be
pulled into a small group where I will offer a more clear and
concise explanation of the project. I can also offer more
modeling of my thinking and walk them through step by step
for choosing their person and beginning their research.

The purpose of this part of the les

to have opportunities to practice r
individuals who were affected by P
also allows them to understand pe
write a journal entry from another
perspective.

Purpose
The purpose of pulling students o
