Many Americans lack an understanding of things beyond the United States or all that is
not American. Through my research I want to better understand their interpretation of
global policy and Palestine, while aiding the people in acquiring a comparative
perspective so that they form a more developed conception of global issues.

andthenafter.Idisplayedphotographsofthewar,includingphotosofsoldiers,
bombings.IshowedphotospeopleIknewinwhichdiedduetothegruesomeoccupation.

AfterIconductedmypresentationinoneofmyclasses,ateacherproposedthatItry
remainingobjectivewhendiscussingsuchatopic.ThispersonclaimedthatItendedto
bebias,anddisplayedmyopinions.ThiswassomethingIknew,butIthenrealizedthatI
neededtoacknowledgebeforepresenting.BeingthatIlivedintheWestBank,myviews
wereunfortunatelyandtruthfullylimited.Iknewtheoccupation,theapartheidwall.I
knewstruggle,death,andultimateinferiority.TheonlyIsraelisIknewweretheIsraeli
DefenseForces(IDF),andtheillegalsettlers.So,thatswhatIpresented.Therealityof
thePalestinianpeople.Thiswouldstandvariousfromthetruthofaneighteenyearold
Israeliperson,orevenanAmerican.FromthisIlearned,Imustclearlystatemyintent.
Ialsolearnedthatnotallfeedbackisthatofthedesired.Ihavealwaysmadeadistinction
betweenaZionistIsraeliandaJew.AndifIhavenot,itwasaccidental.Astudent
approachedmeclaimingthatIhatedJews.Iwasappalled.IamaMuslimlivinginthe
UnitedStates,dealingwithreligiouspersecutionandbigotry.ThelastthingIwanted
peopletobelievewasthatIhatedapeopleinwhichpracticedaparticularfaith.Imstill
confusedastowhaticandrawfromthis.For,Ididimmediatelycorrecther,explaining
toherthedifferencebetweenaZionistandaJew.ButIdorememberinabookIread,
TheExileby:RichardNorthPatterson.Theauthorwroteaboutpeoplesfailureto
distinguishbetweenfundamentalism(Zionism)andreligion(Judaism).
Duringoneofmypresentations,astudentstatedshehatedtheIsraelis.FromthatIhave
betterunderstoodthatpeopleparticularlyteenagersfeelobligatedtochooseaside.Lifeis
notblackinwhite,thingsarenotmerelywrongorright.Lifeismuchmorecomplex,and
thissituationisthebestexampleofthat.Flawscanbecalledonbothparties,astheyboth
havewronged.Ofcourse,theextentmayvary.HatredwasdefinitelynotwhatIwanted
peopletofeel,asIonlysoughttofeedtheirperspectivestoreachultimateempathy.
