Week 2 Assignment

1. Create a middle school warm-up

Relaxation and Alignment:
Directions: Ask students to stand nice and straight as if there was an imaginary line on
the top of their head pulling upwards. Then do a spinal stretch to reinforce a straight back
by extending their arms forward, interlocking their hands, and stretching forward and
downward to the floor while slowly bending the hips. Then, ask them to do a shoulder
roll followed by a head swing. In doing the swing, I will let them know not to roll head
backwards as this can result in the pinching of the cervical vertebrae. Lastly, make sure
they have their knees flexed and relaxed as opposed to locked and tense.
Minutes: 4 minutes
Resonance:
Vowel/Syllable Used: Oo and ee
Directions: Ask students to hum the given pitch (G4) while using the oo sound making
sure lips are closed but slightly extended and teeth slightly apart. Then, ask the students
to sing the same pitch with the ee sound but this time, the tip of the tongue touches the
bottom front teeth.
Range: G4 (G3 for male voices)

Phonation:
Directions: Each phrase of this exercise should be sung on one breath. The four measure

Now lets roll our shoulder three times forwards and backwards at your own speed. Next,
lets swing our heads from side to side and be careful not to roll your head back.
Wonderful class! Now, lets all pretend we were scared by something. What would our
faces look like?(wait for a response or two) Yes, we would have our eyebrows up, mouth
