ThefieldtriptoYogyakartahelpmetoincreasesmyunderstandingandawarenessabout
theissues,whichinvolvesHumanRights,Fairness,andDevelopment.Thesharingsessionof
human rights for people with HIV/AIDS and people with disabilities, interfaith life, waste
management,andlivinginSukunanteachesmeaboutdifferenthumanityvalues.Thelearningof
differentlifestyles,fairnessamongthepeopleHIV/AIDS,anddisabilities,andbuildingempathy
tocareandserveforothershelpmetoseetheworlddifferently.
LivinginSukunanopensmyeyestoseehowpeopleareverydifferentintheirwaysof
living.Thevillagehasaprogramthatstartsin2004ofmanagingwasteandallpeoplethereare
involved in this program. The trashes bins in the village were decorated so it could look
appealingsincetheydonthaveanythingvaluable. Thesepeoplelivinginthevillageisvery
creativeinmakingartcraftsoutofusedplastics,batik,andfabric.Themakingofcoalisalso
veryuniquesincetheyuseStyrofoam,water,andsemen.Inmyopinion,thewaytheylivein
Sukunanisverysimplebuteffective.Forexample,thebathroomisverydifferentfrommine.
Theyusedplantstogetridofsmells;usedpipesarefortheshowers,andmakingventilationin
theroofinsteadofusingelectricity.ThedifferencesIfoundbetweenmybathroomandtheirs
are,Iwouldusedeodorizerinsteadofplants,buyingnewpipesforshowers,andlampforlight.
Thevillagershavedevelopedinthewaytheyreduce,reuseandrecycle.Thishastaughtmeto

livewithmoreresponsibilities,becausebylookingthewaytheyliveIaminspired.Thevillagers
evenhaveasystemforpurifyingwater,makingcomposteroutofanimalswaste,foodwaste,
andanythingthatcanberecycleagain.Thevillageisnotonlywhatweusedtoknow,likedirty,
smelly,andunorganizedplaces.However,lookingandlivingwiththepeopleinSukunan,has
mademetoseethattheyareverywelldevelopedthanus.Themethodstheyuseofpreserving
theirenvironmentshowshowtheyaremorecapableofdevelopingsustainablelivingconditions.
AftervisingthepeoplewhohaveHIV/AIDS,anddisabilitypeopleitactuallytouchmy
heart.Atfirst,IfeelpitybutexcitedtomeetthekidsinYakkumRehabilitationCenter.Iam
afraidthatIllcryorfeelveryemotionaltowhatIwillsee.AsIarrivedintheplace,wewere
askedtogoandmeetthechildreninthelearningclass;theywereseatingintheirwheelchair,but
smilinghappily.Westartthesessionwithalittlekidprayingandbeinggratefulforgatheringall
ustogetherintheplace,orforsimplethings.IstartedcryingwhenhearinghisprayersbecauseI
neverthoughthatpeoplewithdisabilitiesstillhavethechancetosmile,amgratefulforwhat
theyhave,andtojustbehappy.ThereisonekidnamedIqbal,whocheerfullygreeteduswith
happyface.Itmakemethinkthattherearethiskindofpeoplewhoisliving,andthattheyshould
notbediscriminateornotgettheequalrightssuchaspeoplelikeus.Thisisalsoconnectedwhen
I visited the CD Bethesda where we have sharing session to learn about HIV/Aids. The
counselor,MagdalenawhoisavictimofHIV/AIDSgivesustestimonyaboutherexperience.
Shealsosaidthatshelostherhusband,andherfirstdaughterwhoalsogotHIV.Shesaidthat
sheisverydepressed,andlostword.Thefirstthoughshehavewasscaredaboutdyingthenext
day.Sheislivingandworkinghardlikeanormalpersonwoulddo.Peopletendtoseethat
HIV/AIDSpeopleareverysufferingandgoingthroughsomuchpain.Nevertheless,thepersonI

met,Magdalena,shehaveaverystrongspiritoflivingandputtingallherfaithtoJesus.She
evenlosthishusbandlastyear,butsheisstillworkingveryhard.Shesaidthatshestarted
workingat5amandgoinghomeat11pm.Inmyperspective,everypeopleinthisworlddeserve
thesametreatment,rightandequalitythatnooneshouldbediscriminated.Also,thesepeopledo
notneedtobepitybuttheyneedsupport,love,andlifemotivationsfrompeoplelikeus.These
peopleshouldnotbedifferentiatedfrompeoplelikeus,becausetheyarealsoGodscreations
andHelovesallpeoplewithdifferentabilities.
ThiswasthefirsttimeIvisitedInterfideiandtheyexplainedusaboutinterfaithlifeand
taughtustorespectotherpeoplereligions.Althoughwemightthinkmybeliefistherightone,
wecantbethesuperiors,buttobehumbleandloveeveryonethesame.Theyalsotoldusabout
peacecantbemadewithoutrespect,whichmeansweneedtoalsothinkaboutotherpeopletoo.
AnotherthingIlearnedfromthistripisbuildingempathytowardsthepeopleImet.WhatI
learnedinschooltaughtmetocareandloveothersbecausewearethechildrenofGod,andto
showservanthood.Forinstance,wewillalwayshaveachoiceinourlife.Ourdecisionisinour
hand,andthatwhathappenafterwardsistheconsequenceswemakeforourselves.Thefieldtrip
alsotaughtmetoshowcaretopeoplealthoughtheyhavedifferentabilitieswithus.Godsaidin
thebiblethat,ifwealreadyknowwhatisthegoodthingtodo,andnotdoingHisword,means
thatwemakemoreandbiggersinsthatpeoplewhodoesntknowanything. Allofthemare
humanandtheydeservedtobetreatedfairandequalbecausetheynoonehavetherightstobe
discriminate.
In conclusion, the things I learned in field trip has broaden up my knowledge and
understandingaboutwhatIlearnedinIS,English,andBiblicalStudies.Fromthis3lessons,Iam

able to figure out how to see the world differently by meeting people with disabilities,
HIV/AIDS,andlivinginSukunan.Idiscoveredmoreandnewthingsfromthefieldtrip.Asa
humanbeing,Godlovesusall,andalthoughpeoplearedifferentandspecialintheirownway,it
isoneofGodsplans.Inmyperspectiveandbelief,Godhasabetterplanforourfutureandto
haveGodlycharactersandmakeHimsmile.
