The White House pledge of “full support” is weighing down Specter in his re-election bid

SPECTER HOPED TO RIDE OBAMA’S COATTAILS TO RE-ELECTION,

HE’S NOW BEING DRAGGED DOWN BY HIS SAGGING POPULARITY

Specter’s decision to switch parties was aided by the promise he would have “full support” of White House
Whit e House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed that Mr. Obama pledged his full support to Mr.
Specter. “Full support means full support.”

And when Obama’s approval rating in Pennsylvania was at 66%, Sen. Specter’s approval rating was at 56%
And Specter led prospective Republican opponent Pat Toomey by 20 points, 53% to 33%

Now Obama’s approval rating in PA has dropped to 45% and along with him, Specter’s has dropped to 44%
Specter now trails Toomey by 5 points, 46% to 41%

Specter now trails Toomey by 5 points, 46% to 41%

Yesterday, Obama said the VAT would be “novel for the United States”
"I know that there's been a lot of talk around town lately about the value-added tax. That is something
that has worked for some countries. It's something that would be novel for the United States." (CNBC's
"Street Signs," 4/20/10)

Obama's economic team has already calculated how large VAT would need to be in order to pay for their
binge-spending
“…One way to reach that 3% goal, by the calculations of Mr. Obama's economic team: a 5 percent
value-added tax ..." (John Harwood of The New York Times, 4/18/10)

Obama economic adviser Paul Volcker says the VAT is needed to get Obama’s deficit under control
"The United States ... may need to consider a European-style value-added tax, White House adviser
Paul Volcker said on Tuesday. Volcker ... said the value-added tax 'was not as toxic an idea' as it has
been in the past ... 'If at the end of the day we need to raise taxes, we should raise taxes,' he said."
