Important Facts about Claude Monet:
1. Monet also became increasingly sensitive to the decorative
qualities of color and form. He began to apply paint in
smaller strokes, building it up in broad fields of color, and, in
the 1880s, he began to explore the possibilities of a
decorative paint surface and harmonies and contrasts of
color.
2. The year 1911 Monet saw the death of his second wife, Alice,
followed by his son, Jean. Shattered by these deaths, the
ragings of the First World War, and even a cataract forming
over one of his eyes, Monet essentially ceased to paint.
Finally, his friend Georges Clemenceau lifted him out of his
mourning by encouraging him to create his water garden
series, of which the Water Lilies (1918) is a part.
3. The next two decades of Monet's life and work were
characterized by constant travel. He visited Norway and
Venice, and made several journeys to London and around
France. Monet was less concerned with modernity in his
works and more with atmosphere and environment.
Most important works:
- Boulevard des Capucines
- Westminster Bridge (aka The Thames below Westminster)
- Women in the Garden
I think Claude Monet uses nature as an advantage. Monet knows
how to use nature by making it dramatic or a very calming scene.

I admire his use of colors. Monet knows how to work light colors
and dark together to make the painting seem like it has texture.

This is what I see when I look at artwork?
The thing that catches my eye is the reflection on the water. In
general you are just supposed to see the pond, but if you look
closely you can see the trees on the reflection. The colors also
make everything come together. The texture on the frog pads
made the painting seem like you can touch the pads and get feel
the pad.
All art is made using a variety of art elements: line, shape,
color, texture and space. The one or two elements that

A part that stands out is the color of this painting. The color
stands out because you can see reflections on the pond and it
stands out because you dont just focus on the pond, you also
focus on the surroundings.
Another part that stands out are the trees in the reflection. They
stand out because when you first look at the picture in first

glance, you think that the trees are part of the pads but when you
look at it for a while you start to know it is part of the reflection.

This painting by Claude Monet does not have a certain feeling. To

am actually there. The painting makes me feel like all my

Artists try to communicate or send messages with their
art work. What message do you think the artist was trying
to send with this work?
I think the message that Claude Monet is trying to send is that a
peaceful message. Monet is a calming artist. All of his work is
probably trying to tell the viewers of his artwork that everything is
going to be okay.
I like this artwork because
It reminds of my childhood. It reminds me that everything is going
