Thesis:
Governments actions contribute to societys change in attitude toward tobacco, but also,
peoples reaction toward this actions, their own experiences on tobacco consumption,
and experiences of those who surround them.
Primary research:
Throughout the decades the U.S Government has implemented different types of laws and
regulations that enrich their tobacco control over the different states in the country. These laws
are made to protect public health, and they do this by passing smoke-free air laws, which
prohibit smoking in public places and workplaces. This type of law is a perfect example of how
the governments actions can now have a direct effect on peoples change in attitude toward this
issue. They have now taken that freedom that you used to have in the past, of smoking in any
public place that you wanted. Now there are restricted areas, so anytime that you want to
smoke you need to be in a legal place, this means every smoker has less places to smoke,
which leads to a decrease cigarette consumption per person in the U.S. The government has
also increased tobacco excise taxes, which increase the purchase price of tobacco products."

U.S GOVERNMENT AND CITIZENS THE CORE OF TOBACCO CONSUMPTION

As the years go on, there exist a sense of evolution in societys attitude toward specific
issues. One issue that has developed tremendously and has been of great concern towards the
U.S government and also U.S citizens in the past one-hundred years, is tobacco consumption.
In the 1940s were war was a crucial factor on U.S citizens, tobacco was accepted among
people from all different ages, but as the decades passed, U.S citizens attitude toward this issue
changed drastically. In the past ten years the government have make consistent investments, of
millions of dollars, on research related to tobacco and the effects it has on peoples health and
also on the U.S economy, so it is essential to have a comprehensive approach, including
educational, economic, and social strategies. All the research is done in order to come up with
legitimate data and information that can create conscious in people, so they can make better
decisions when it comes to tobacco consumption. One other main reason for why this research
is conducted is so the government can create and state; policies, regulations, and laws, in order
to have more control over this issue. Governments actions contribute to societys change
in attitude toward tobacco, but also, peoples reaction toward this actions, their own

experiences on tobacco consumption, and experiences of those who surround them.

These have been the most influential and critical links over time in societys attitude change.
Throughout the decades the U.S Government has implemented different types of laws
and regulations that enrich their tobacco control over the different states in the country. These
laws are made to protect public health, and they do this by passing smoke-free air laws, which
prohibit smoking in public places and workplaces.
This law also contributes to the reduction in consumption among adults, but mainly on the
teenager population since they do not make a lot of money or any money at all, so it also has
the power to prevent new people to start smoking. This is evidence that these types of laws
reduce cigarette use in adults, prevent new people to start smoking, and also encourage people
to quit the habit of smoking, because it is less accepted in places and more expensive. The
government wants to have this control so there is a decrease in the number of diseases and
deaths, there are different strategies to do this such as; educational, clinical, regulatory,
economic, and social strategies, that have and need to be implemented in order to eliminate
negative health and also take full advantage of the economic effects of this issue. It is essential
that the Government use citizens/peoples opinions and voice, because when you include public
participation you create the most effective and efficient; policies/laws/strategies, and this is why
Federal Agencies ask for public input, to promote more and better public health around the
country.
One of the main reasons that tobacco consumption has shaped societys way of thinking
and feeling about this issue is, legitimate research the government makes. The 3 branches of
government that fund cancer research are the Department of Defense, the National Institute of
Health and the Center for Disease Control. These investments the government is putting into
cancer research, has led to an increase in society's awareness towards the risks tobacco can
have on the evolution or creation of cancer within human beings. They have found out that
although smoking is the main cause of lung cancer, lung cancer risk also is increased by
exposure to secondhand smoke; environmental exposures, such as radon, workplace toxins
(e.g., asbestos, arsenic), and air pollution. These risks can be reduced by quitting smoking,
eliminating or reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, and eliminating or reducing
environmental and workplace risk factors. In the early-mid 1900s people did not know how
harmful could consumption be until now that the government has started to investigate and get
involved, they have influenced peoples attitude change, because even factories all around the
country is taking risk preventions with their workers.. But still, due to all of the exposure left, it is
a fact that people have had experiences that shaped and change their lives and those who
surround them. There are stories that have touched other peoples heart, and change the
perspective they have towards this issue. In the U.S there exists thousands of families, that

once one family member has been diagnosed with cancer everything around the family
changes, and it can be affected in a positive or negative way, depending on how emotionally
stable family members are. They can either see life differently by not taking anything for granted
and enjoy every moment of their life or they can enter on depression and not see a sense of
living because they feel victimized. Peoples own experience and those who surround them is
highly related to the Governments effort to stabilize and help people who are affected or can be
affected by tobacco consumption.
It is important to know that lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer. Taking more lives than
breast, colon, prostate, and pancreatic cancer combined. In the US alone, 220,000 people will
be diagnosed and 160,000 will die of lung cancer, so it is an issue that needs to create more
awareness among individuals.
