Lesson Topic: Unit Lesson 1 of 3

Completing Applications

Learner(s): Yuning and Sefali

Reflect on your previous lesson: What went well? What did not go well?
-Last session was a learning experience for me. I had an entire lesson plan
ready for that day when Sefali completely took over. It was a good thing, but
it definitely threw me off. I had a lesson ready to go about comma usage
which was a concern for her, but she wanted to go over a few questions
regarding other aspects of grammar that she said were affecting her ability
to verbalize her thoughts such as word chose and subject verb agreement.
Yuning agreed that she would like to work on grammar that affected her
ability to verbalize her thoughts rather than grammar that only affected her
writing as well.
What have you learned about the student(s) that will inform this lesson?
(Think about data from assessments or from your previous activities)
-I learned that the ability to verbalize their thoughts and ideas is far more
important and urgent to them than the ability to write their thoughts and
ideas down even though their writing is still a concern they have. I also
learned that Sefali and Yuning do not have a problem stopping me and
redirecting me, which is helpful with adult learners.
Objective(s) for this lesson:
- After defining as a group, students will define terms from the application
accurately.
- After modeling and guided practice, the students will complete an
application with no grammar or spelling miscues.
Brief description of activity:
-First, we will discuss any questions they may have on anything that they ran
into this week or thought about after our last few lessons.
-Next, we will go over the target vocabulary used in college applications and
their definitions as a group.
Target Vocabulary:
-Soc sec no. (social security number)
-Permanent (address)

-Indicate
-Major
-Concentration
-Degree pursued
-ROTC
-Residency
-Afterwards, We will navigate the websites (EKU and BCTC) to get to the
applications. (At this point me may need to go over creating a user name
and password for an application.) We will then fill out an application together.
We will discuss how and where to find some of the information that the
application asks for such as major, SSN, etc.
-We will then discuss ways to send in applications (mailing in or
electronically) and where to find that information on the websites.
-After that, each of the students will fill out an application on their own.
-With any leftover time, we will discuss their latest writing samples and talk
about any specifics they would like to work on with their writing.
List any materials youll need for this lesson:
-Applications
-Computer
