Science, Technology, Engineering, Math applied to Social Studies curriculum

SS2H2The student will describe the Georgia Creek and Cherokee cultures of the past
in terms of tools, clothing, homes, ways of making a living, and accomplishments. a.
Describe the regions in Georgia where the Creeks and Cherokees lived and how the
people used their local resources.

First we imagined that we were Native Americans and had to work with
our villagers to protect our village from flooding. We then planned and
built Cherokee and Creek Native American Villages using natural materials.

Next, we worked together to create levees

to protect our villages from floods.

We flooded three villages and observed the

results.

Will the levees hold?

We watched, and waited with anticipation.

All of our villages flooded. But some were constructed better

than others. We looked for the weaknesses in our levees. We
discussed what we can do to improve our levees next time.

We looked at the mathematical problems we

encountered. How could we use measurement better to
account for height, width, and depth?

As Scientists, we concluded our experiment with data.

We documented what happened and what needed to be
improved on for next time.

As engineers, we drew out our experiment

and our plan for next time.

How can we use the technology available at

the time to improve on our designs?

We held a Science Conference where we

shared our findings with others.

We filed our experiment into our interactive

notebooks.

Our interactive notebooks keep all of our

important Scientific work organized.
