His father was a preacher in a Dutch Reformed

His Personal Life

He started off as an art dealer, then studied to become a

minister, and lastly made his way up as an artist.

He lived and traveled through France and Belgium to paint
different things and learn new techniques.
Towards the end of his life, he became mentally unstable.
(cut off his ear, checked himself into an asylum, shot
himself, etc.)
