Learning basic Mandarin Chinese in Minecraft:


Preposition - Describe relative location of two
objects
Lesson Plan Outline
Grade:
6th-12th grade students.
Subject/Content Area:
World language: Mandarin Chinese
Goals:
This instruction will enable beginning-level Mandarin Chinese learners to describe the
relative location of two specific objects using Chinese preposition in the Minecraft 3-D
environment.
Objectives:
This one-hour lesson is divided into six individual ten-minute tasks of learning how to
use six Mandarin Chinese prepositions to describe the relative location of two subjects:
Students describe object A is in front of object B in Mandarin Chinese;
Students describe object A is behind object B in Mandarin Chinese;
Students describe object A is above/on object B in Mandarin Chinese;
Students describe object A is under/below/beneath object B in Mandarin Chinese;
Students describe object A is on the right of object B in Mandarin Chinese;
Students describe object A is on the left of object B in Mandarin Chinese.
Assessment Strategy:
Through the in-world real-time conversation with students, instructor will stand in the
center point of the task ground and move around in order to determine students level of
proficiency in using Chinese preposition and reward students achievements accordingly.
Materials:
Access to a computer with internet access and Minecraft installed;
Students note books and pens.
Procedures:
1. Introduce students to the six proofing grounds designed for Chinese preposition practice.
2. Introduce students to the Chinese prepositions and sentence structure used to describe
relative location of two subjects.
3. Introduce students to the Task Achievement Board and conversation/evaluation
process.
4. Assign students to each task ground and begin learning and practice for 10 minutes.
5. Rotate student to new task grounds until (s)he completes all six task practices.
6. Ask student to proceed to the center point of the entire task ground to meet with
instructor and begin interview and conversation so as to determine students proficiency
in using preposition just learned.

7. Reward appropriate achievement badges to students and keep the achievement


leaderboard updated.
