Introduction to Dynamic Spring Supports

What are Dynamic Spring supports?
Therearedifferenttypesofdynamicorflexiblesupport.Eachhasitsownpurpose.Dynamicsupports
supportthepipeinvibrations,seismic,windsandeventakeloadsinworkingconditions.
Topreventconstraintsinthesystem,thermalexpansioninthepipingandtheotherpiping
componentsmustnotbehindered.Thepipingmustthereforebesupportedinacorrespondingly
elasticmannersotocompensateslightverticaldisplacementsinthepiping,Springcomponentsare
usedassupports.

Variable Spring Supports

Pipeworkand/orvesselssubjecttotemperaturechangeorsubsidence,etc.whichgiverisetovertical
displacementsshouldbesupportedbyaresilientdevicewhichwillabsorb/accommodatethe
movement.Forrelativelysmalldisplacements(uptoabout75mm)thevariablespringsupportis
recommended.
Standardrangesofvariablespringsupportsareproducedinfourbasictravelranges35mm,70mm,
140mmand210mm.Thetravelsstatedarethemaximumworkingrangeofthesprings.Thisfull
travelcanbeusedprovidingthenecessarycalculationsarecarriedouttoensurethattheconnecting
equipmentandpipeworkcanwithstandthelargeloadchangesthatoccurduringpipemovement.
Mostnationalstandardsdolimittheloadvariationtomaximumof25%.Itisthereforeusualtoselect
variablespringsupportsonthisbasis.

Inkeepingwithgenerallyacceptedpractice,it'srecommendthattheactualpipeloadiscorrectly
supportedwhenthepipeisinitsnormalworkingposition.Thisensuresnoabnormalorexcessive
forces,duetooutofbalancesupportingeffort,istransferredtothepipeworkinitsstressedworking
condition.
Whetherthisoranyotherprincipleisfollowedfortheselectionofvariablespringsupports,caremust
betakentoensurethatsufficienttravelisavailableinthespringassemblytopermitfreemovementof
thepipewithintherequiredpipeworkmovementrangecoldorhot.

Hanger,theonemostfrequentlyused,isfittedwithanupperconnectionfor

suspension.Itisinstalledwhereverthesurroundinglocationoffersasuitableconnectionpointand
sufficientspace.Theupperconnectionscanbeuniversallyadaptedwithstandardcomponentstoany
givensituation.

Load setting and blocking

Springhangersandsupportsarepresetattheworkstotheinstallationloadandblockedinboth
directionsofmovement.Blockingisnecessarytotakeupadditionalloadsduringpickling,flushing,or
hydrostatictests.Thefactorysettingsarecarriedoutonelectronicallycontrolledtestbenches:
withspringhangers,valuessetatthefactoryarestampedontoarivetednameplate
theinstallationpositionismarkedonthetravelscale
coldandhotsettingsaremarkedonthetravelscalewithawhiteandredstickerrespectively
theblockingdevicecanbeblockedinanyposition
Theblockingpiecescanbereinsertedinanyrequiredposition
Springhangersandsupportsshouldbesetinsuchawaythatthespringloadandthepipingweight
correspondwiththecoldloadposition.Thecorrespondinghotloadpositionresultsfromthe
theoreticallydeterminedpipemovement(travel)andthespringrate.Theloaddifferencebetweenthe
coldandhotpositionsactsonthepipingasareactionforceandislimitedbytherelevantdesign
specifications.Generally,themax.permissibleloaddeviationamountsto25%oftheoperatingload.

Installation Instructions
Hangingtypesupportsareinstalledinpositiononthesupportingsteelwork,theslingrodisconnected
betweenthepipeattachment(clamporlug)andthespringhangerturnbuckle.Rotationofthe
turnbuckle,transfersthepipeloadtothespringhanger.
Basemountedsupportsarelocatedinthedesiredpositionbeneaththepipeloadistransferredfrom
thepipetothesupportbymeansofrotatingthecentralcolumn.

ATNOPOINTPRIORTOORDURINGTHEINSTALLATIONPROCESSSHOULDTHE
TRAVELSTOPSBEREMOVED.ATTEMPTINGTOREMOVETHETRAVELSTOPS
WITHOUTALLLOADREMOVEDFROMTHESTOPSCANRESULTINPROPERTY
DAMAGEORPERSONALINJURY.

Preset Lock Removal

Thisrangeofvariablespringsupportsispresettotheinstalledloadpositionpriortodespatch.The
presetlocksarefittedwithalabeldrawingattentiontothefactthatthesemustberemovedpriorto
systemoperation.Whenfitted,thehydrostaticlockspreventthespringdeflectingduringhydrostatic
tests.Theyalsomustberemovedpriortosystemoperation.Thepresetlocksfittedtohangingtypes
areremovedbyrotatingtheturnbuckletoincreaseloaduntilthelocksarefreethelocksarethen
withdrawnfromthespringunit.Inthecaseofthebasemountedtype,simplyrotatethecentre
columntoincreaseloaduntilthelocksarefreethelocksarethenwithdrawnfromthespringunit.
Fortheremovalofhydrostatictestlockstheprocedureisrepeated,excepttheturnbuckle/loadcolumn
isrotatedtoreduceload.Alllocksareremovedbycuttingthetemporarybandingholdingthemin
positionintheunit.Thelockscanthenbewithdrawn.

TRAVELSTOPSMUSTBEREMOVEDBEFOREANYTESTINGORCLEANINGOFTHE
SYSTEMABOVEAMBIENTTEMPERATURESISDONE.SHOULDTHISCAUSE
GREATERLOADINGTHANTHEDESIGNLOADS,TEMPORARYSUPPORTSMUSTBE
PROVIDED.

Adjustment
Wheninstalledthespringunitsshouldbeadjusteduntiltheloadindicatorspointtotheinstalledload
position.Theunitsshouldbecheckedfollowingareasonableperiodofoperation(preferablyinthe
operatingcondition).Theloadindicatorshouldbeindicatingtheoperatingload.Ifminordifferences

areapparentthentheunitsshouldbeadjustedtotheoperatingpositionnofurtheradjustments
shouldbenecessary.Ifmajordifferencesarenotedtheneitherconsultthedesignerdepartmentfor
advice,priortomakingadjustments.

ATTEMPTINGTOREMOVETRAVELSTOPSWITHOUTALLLOADINGREMOVEDFROM
THESTOPSMAYRESULTINPROPERTYDAMAGEORPERSONALINJURY.

Maintenance
EachSpringSupportmustbeinspectedannuallytoverifythecorrectsettingoftheloadindicator.
Ifrequired,thesupportshouldbeadjusted.
Alldust,soot,andforeignobjectswhichmayimpairhangeroperationshallberemoved.Nofurther
maintenanceisrequired.

UNDERNOCIRCUMSTANCESSHOULDASPRINGSUPPORTBEDISASSEMBLED.THE
COMPRESSIONSPRINGISPRECOMPRESSEDANDCANCAUSESEVEREINJURY.
