ELA Reflection
The English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework stretches from
Kindergarten to twelfth grade. This means that all the foundational material that students should
know is covered and the growth and development that students go through should also be reflected
in their language arts knowledge. As student progresses through their educational tiers their work
will be getting more and more rigorous and challenging but if the student succeeds in understand

As a class, it was our responsibility to read the overview section of a chapter and share with
our group mates what we had learned. I was in charge of Chapter 5, which spans grades 4 and 5. As
a group we noticed a repeating pattern of the necessity that a student must have a strong
foundational level. The foundational level of English Language Arts is the alphabet. By having a
keen understanding of the alphabet, students can then start to build on that by forming words,
sentences, and conceptual thoughts in writing.
Part of the purpose of this assignment was to be able to draw connections between what we
were reading and of our own personal experience as college students. For chapter 5, I was able to
see connections to English 487 an Introduction to Second Language Teaching course offered at
Dominguez Hills. The course is intended to help future teachers be better at their job by
understanding how dual language learners might have trouble in some classes. Tips and tricks were
supplied in this class, as well.
