DESCRIBE TOEFL PREPARATION


TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) is a test of English language proficiency (an
American accent) who is required to register go to college (college) or university in the United
States or other countries in the world. This exam is required for applicants whose native
language or the speaker is not English. TOEFL exam is organized by the office of ETS
(Educational Testing Service) in the United States to test all participants throughout the world.
Type the TOEFL English test is generally required for college entrance requirements in
almost all universities in the United States and Canada for both undergraduate program (S-1) or
graduate (S-2 or S-3). TOEFL test results are also used as a material consideration of English
language proficiency of prospective students who apply to universities in other countries,
including universities in Europe and Australia. In general, the TOEFL test is more oriented to
American Home, and a few different types of IELTS oriented to the British Home. Unlike the
IELTS test, TOEFL test is in general not have the individual parts of the interview test. Unlike
IELTS, TOEFL test is generally do not have individual part interview test. Besides TOEFL in
adults is already beginning to be used in the workplace as one of the mechanisms of recruitment
or promotion ladder. Usually this test takes about three hours and is organized in four parts,
namely :

Listening Comprehension
Grammar Structure and Written Expression
Reading Comprehension
Writing

Generally this test to assess:

Students have writing skills and grammar in English to be able to make scientific

literature.
Students have the ability to read English properly so that later can understand the books

required textbooks.
Students have the ability to listen well and truly on the description given lectures in
English.

Until now, the TOEFL has undergone three evolution of turnover since the format was first
created 47 years ago. In addition to the change in format, TOEFLjuga changing very different
in terms of results / value, as seen in the chart below:
Year 1964 - 1998 TOEFL Paper Based Test (PBT)
Year 1998 - 2005 TOEFL Computer Based Test (CBT)
Year 2005 - Now TOEFL Internet Based Test
TOEFL iBT test this new format is a tool to measure the English language all four language
skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) in an objective, valid and focused for those
who follow this TOEFL test.

TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT)


The TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) evaluates all four language skills that are essential
for effective communication: reading, listening, speaking (new!), and writing:
Reading - measures the ability to understand academic reading matter. Consists of 3 to
5 academic reading passages followed by comprehension questions.
Listening - measures the ability to understand English as it is used in colleges and
universities. Consists of 4 to 6 lectures, which include classroom dialogue, and 2 to 3
conversations that include two or more speakers in each.
Speaking - measures the ability to speak English. Consists of 6 open-ended speaking
questions, which require test takers to speak into a microphone. Responses are recorded
and scored by human graders.
Writing - measures the ability to write in a way that is appropriate for college and
university course work. The TOEFL iBT contains an added 20-minute essay along with
the current 30-minute essay.

Paper-based Test

The TOEFL paper-based Test (PBT) is available in limited areas. Scores are valid for
two years after the test date, and test takers can have their scores sent to institutions or

agencies during that time.


Listening (30 40 minutes)
The Listening section consists of 3 parts. The first one contains 30 questions about short
conversations. The second part has 8 questions about longer conversations. The last part

asks 12 questions about lectures or talks.


Structure and Written Expression (25 minutes)
The Structure and Written Expression section has 15 exercises of completing sentences

correctly and 25 exercises of identifying errors.


Reading Comprehension (55 minutes)
The Reading Comprehension sections has 50 questions about reading passages.
Writing (30 minutes)
The TOEFL PBT administrations include a writing test called the Test of Written English

(TWE). This is one essay question with 250300 words in average


TOEFL ITP

TOEFL ITP ("ITP" stands for "Institutional Testing Program") tests are paper-based and use
academic content to evaluate the English-language proficiency of non-native English
speakers. The tests use new and previously administered TOEFL test questions and are used
for placement, progress, evaluation, exit testing and other situations. The test scores, format
and content of the test matches the "TOEFL PBT", with the exception of not including the
TWE (Test of Written Expression).

TOEFL Junior Tests

ETS also offers the TOEFL Junior tests, a general assessment of middle school-level
English-language proficiency. It is intended for students aged 11+.The tests are
administered in two formats: TOEFL Junior Standard (on paper) andTOEFL Junior
Comprehensive (via computer). The TOEFL Junior Standard test has three sections:
Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension and Language Form and Meaning.
The TOEFL Junior Comprehensive test has four: Reading Comprehension, Listening
Comprehension, Speaking and Writing. TOEFL Junior scores are mapped to the CEFR
and test takers are provided with a certificate of achievement.

TOEFL Differences and IELTS

Note the university requirements. In general, the TOEFL test requested by a


university in the United States and Canada, while the IELTS test is accepted by
institutions in Australia, Britain and New Zealand. However, now many universities
that accept both tests the English language, for example, many US universities also
accept the IELTS test. Instead, check back on special terms requested by the

university you to take the proper test.


The cost of the test. Costs to be paid to take the TOEFL test is $ 175 and for IELTS,

the test fee is $ 195.


How to retrieve the text. In general, the TOEFL test in question is TOEFL iBT
(Internet Based Test) where you will be required to record all your answers on the
computer. IELTS, all answers are written by hand, and the 'speaking section' will

diniilai directly by the person who will hear your answer.


How to assessment tests. The latest TOEFL iBT test has a maximum value of 120,
where each part (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) each having a value of 30
that will be accumulated. The test assesses each section with a score of 0-9, which

will be leveled to the final score on a scale of 0-9.0


English is used. TOEFL test using American English, while the IELTS test uses
British English. Although both are relatively the same, there are several different

spellings, idioms and dialects are different between the two.


Reading section. The reading section in the TOEFL test will provide approximately 35 reading texts are followed by multiple-choice questions. While in IELTS, you will

get 3 reading texts with questions mixture.


Speaking section. In the TOEFL test, you will record your answer six short questions
on a computer. In the IELTS test, you will talk to an appraiser directly with a duration
of 12-14 minutes where you will be asked a couple of questions about me and about a

topic of discussion.
Writing section. You will write two answers to both of these tests. For the TOEFL
test, first you will write 300-350 words on a given topic, and the second essay will
incorporate the ability to write and mendangar. While in the IELTS test, the first essay
will be 200-250 words, and in the second part you will conclude your income from an
information chart.

Listening section. In the TOEFL test, you will be listening to the conversation and
teaching for about 40-60 minutes, where you have to record important information to
answer questions at the end of the test. While in the IELTS test, you will listen to
different kinds of short audio snippets, and you will answer the question directly

while you hear the audio.


Distress. Many people are asking what is more convenient test. Actually, it is based
on a subjective opinion, and both of these tests are relatively equal in degree of

difficulty.
The duration of the test. The TOEFL test lasted for nearly four hours, whereas IELTS
has a duration of about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
