Description of Activities
Preparation of Poultry House - The Poultry House was cleaned and disinfected 2 days before
the arrival of chicks.
Construction of Brooder for Young Chicks -: Brooder was constructed using a movable
partition consisting of zinc around the perimeter to separate the brooder from the rest of the
poultry house. Lighting and heating was set up over the centre of the brooding area. Litter was
placed inside. Plastics bags were used to cover the outer walls to keep out cold draughts.
Construction of Foothbath-: A footbath with disinfectant was made in front of the poultry
house to prevent infections with disease causing organisms to enter the poultry house.
Introduction of Chicks to Poultry House-: Chicks were collected from hatchery, counted and
inspected for disabilities then placed in brooding area with a light source.
Management of Litter in Poultry House-: After 3 weeks, litter was continually turned and
replaced. Wet litter was replaced with fresh ones. The litter had a thickness of 5-7 cm this
absorbed droppings and kept the chicks off the cold ground.
Weekly Weight of Chickens-: After the 1st week an average weight of chickens was taken every
other week to establish proper weight gain and efficient production up to slaughtering.
Slaughtering of Chickens-: At 6 weeks and 2 days the chickens were slaughtered. Slaughtering
was done by using a knife to remove the head of the chickens allowing it to drain for a few
minutes. The chickens were then removed and dipped in hot water. The feathers and guts were
removed. Chickens were then placed in cold water.
Packaging, Grading and Sales of Chickens-: Chickens were removed from the cold water and
inspected. They were then placed in bags with labels, weighed and sold to members of the
community including teachers.

Expenditure of Poultry Project

General Comments:
During the stages of production the chickens were always well fed and water readily available,
this ensured a the brood was kept healthy. Due to unfortunate circumstances many

Conclusion:
A profit was obtained from the production of Poultry. Good agricultural practices were adhered
to producing a brood of chickens which had minor loss. Resources were used effectively and .
120 chicks were bought but only 107 survived due to 13 birds suffering from a likely cardiac
arrest which could not be prevented. 107. They were bought at $85 per chick and sold at $175
per lb yielding a profit of 41.9%.

Recommendations:
Chickens should be housed under conditions in which natural elements such as
temperature dont affect them as much.
A nursery should be set up for ill chickens where they are fed this could avoid casualties
as sometimes ill chickens are trampled upon by bigger healthier ones and they dont
obtain food so they die.
Feed and water should be readily available
Feed Pan should be regularly raised to encourage growth and stretching of chicken necks.
