Overview
Inthislesson,studentswilllearnmoreaboutthespreadandvarietyofdifferingpathogensand
virusesthroughuseofthegamePlagueInc.Whileworkingingroups,eachgroupwillbein
chargeofplayingthegamewiththeirownassignedpathogen,takingnoteonwhichevolutions
andchoicesarebeneficialandwhicharenot.Theywillthenresearchtheirpathogenseffecton
therealworldandtryagain.Afterbothexperiences,theyllendwithamuchbetter
understandingofhowdiseasespreads,actionstakentopreventit,andtheimpactrealworld
exampleshavehad.Fromthis,theyllbeabletoputtogetherapresentationtodemonstrate
theirnewlygainedknowledge.

Procedures
1. Breakthestudentsintogroups.Baseduponclassandpreferablegroupsize,assign
eachamoretypicalpathogen.Thereare10differentpathogenstochoosefrom,but
lessercommononessuchasNecroaVirus,NeuraxWorm,andBioWeaponmaybeleft
outifgroupdistributionisanissue.
2. Havethegroupsplaythegameastheirassignedpathogenwithoutanyknowledge
abouthowthepathogenoperatesorevolves.HavethemtakenotesinaGoogleDoc
aboutwhatchoicestheymadeandtheresultsoftheirchoices.
3. Afterthegroupshavefinishedtheirfirstgame,allowthemtoresearchintorealworld
instancesandbehaviorsoftheirpathogensaswellashowithasevolvedovertimeand
spread.Havethemtakenotesontheirfindingsoneitherthesameoradifferent
documentasbefore.
4. Basedupontheirresearch,havethegroupsreplaythegameasthesamepathogen.
Havethemmakechoicesbaseduponthenotestheyhavetakenandhavethemagain
takenoteofthechoicestheymadeandtheresultsbecauseofthem.
5. Oncethesecondgameisdone,havethegroupsputtogetherapresentationonGoogle
Slidesabouttheirpathogen.Thepresentationshouldincludetheirinitialchoices,a
summaryoftheirresearchandfindings,andtheresultsoftheirsecondplaythrough.
Theyshouldbeencouragedtoaddimagesandcitationswhennecessary.
6. Thegroupsshouldthenpresenttotherestoftheclasssothattheclassasawhole
gainsanunderstandingofeachassignedpathogenanditsevolutionandspread.

Assessments
Studentsshouldbeassessedintwoparts:participationandpresentation.Theyshouldreceive
participationcreditiftheycontributedtothegroupthoughtanddecisionsandiftheirgrouptook
notesanddidtheirresearch.ThepresentationgradewillthenbebasedupontheGoogleSlides
presentation.Abetterscorewillbegiventopresentationsthatdisplayanunderstandingofthe
subjectandfullgroupparticipationduringthecourseofthepresentationwhilealowerscore
maybegiventogroupsthatdontdisplayanunderstandingoftheirpathogenafterthegame
andresearchprocess.
