Does playing sports help improve grades ?

- Research increasingly points to academic benefits for kids who have some
regular physical activity.

- 50 studies that examined the effect of school-based physical activity on

academic performance and discovered that half of the studies showed
positive associations and virtually none of the research demonstrated any
negative impact.

- Multiple studies demonstrated that even relatively short spans of physical

activity helped increase the duration and intensity of concentration

- A study by James Pivarnik and colleagues at the American College of Sports

Medicine discovered that middle-school students who performed best on
fitness tests -- gauging aerobic capacity, strength, endurance and body
composition -- also performed better academically.

- Writing on the website Oregon Live.com, Wendy Owen observes that

students who play on sports teams learn leadership skills, responsibility,
discipline and time management skills that carry over into the classroom.
For some students, sports can provide motivation for improved academic
performance.

School sports and academic achievement

They suggested that if sports participation contributes to academic achievement,

it may do so indirectly, by encouraging retention in school.

Cooper et al. found that even after eliminating confounding factors,

extracurricular activities, including sports and PA were predictors of better
academic achievement in 2,200 American high school students.

Students engaged in extracurricular PAs do not achive different academic scores

than their peers, but they feel a greater engagement with their institution.

They observed a small but significant positive correlation between sports

performance and GCSE score for both mathematics and English. (The British
General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE).)

Another study of 11,957 American adolescents found that even after

standardization for SES, sports participation with parental presence was
associated with an increased probability of good grades in English and
mathematics, the Adjusted Relative Risk being 1.23 for both subjects.

The impact of participation in sports on educational

PR2 Research notes and summaries

Notes:

- We conclude that participation of German adolescents in sport activities

has significant positive effects on educational attainment.
- More precisely, we analyze if young Germans who
participate in outside school athletic activities have better educational
attainment inform of secondary school degrees and professional degrees.

- Therefore, they suggested that if sports participation contributes to

academic achievement, it may do so indirectly, by encouraging retention in
school.

- There are many cultures within school sports, and any effect on academic
achievement is influenced by gender, race, type of sport, type and level of
athletic involvement.

Effects of sleeping habits on academic performance

The Link Between Sleep Quantity and Academic Performance for the College Student

PR2 Research notes and summaries

Notes:

- Quantity of sleep was significantly related with academic performance. The

average amount of sleep a student receives per night does seem to be tied to the
student's GPA(grade-point average). Also, an increased number of nights in an
average week that the student obtains less than five hours of sleep (our measure of
sleep deprivation) seems to be negatively related to GPA.
- We found support for our hypothesis that sleep quantity and academic performance
are related. Partial sleep deprivation measures for the average week, as well as the
average amount of sleep obtained in a night, were both shown to be related to GPA.
This result holds many practical applications for the college student. Although we
cannot conclude from the present study that more sleep causes better grades, we
have shown that amount of sleep and academic success are positively correlated.
Further research should be conducted on more specific healthy sleep behaviors, such
as a students sleeping environment and de-stressing techniques if the student has
troubles falling asleep. It would help the aspiring student become aware of more
specific ways they may be able to utilize their sleep habits in the hopes of improving
their grades.
- We administered a convenience sample of 103 surveys to undergraduate classes on
the campus of the University of Minnesota. The participants consisted of 50 males
and 53 females with ages ranging from 18 to 45 years old.

The sleep habits, personality and academic performance of medical students

- There were ninety-two male and twelte female students.
- Some findings were interpreted to mean that late sleepers were more extroverted
or aggressively outgoing in their daily lives, but had less concern for the
consequences of their behaviour than early sleepers did. In the present context,
early sleepers, who were more realistic in their self-appraisal, more sensitive to the
consequences of the actions, and who were presumably therefore more
conscientious, also performed better academically than late sleepers.
- The corresponding difference on weekdays was only 15 minutes and did not quite
reach statistical significance. The quality of sleep was reported as very good by 73%
of students whose exam marks were highest, by 70% of those with a clear pass, and
by only 40% of those with borderline results. The others described their sleep either
as moderately good or moderately bad.

The relationship between sleep and wake habits and academic performance in
medical students: a cross-sectional study

Notes:

The average group had a higher ESS score and a higher percentage of students who
felt sleepy during class. In contrast, the excellent group had an earlier bedtime and
increased TST during weekdays. Subjective feeling of obtaining sufficient sleep and
non-smoking were the only independent predictors of excellent
performance.Decreased nocturnal sleep time, late bedtimes during weekdays and
weekends and increased daytime sleepiness are negatively associated with academic
performance in medical students.
-Classes usually start at 07:3008:00. The total number of students in the first three
academic levels was 900 students (60% males).
- A higher proportion of the excellent group felt that they obtained sufficient nocturnal
sleep. In addition, the subjective feeling of getting sufficient sleep was an independent
predictor of excellent performance. Howell et al. conducted a study on college
students and confirmed a correlation between poor sleep quality and academic
performance. The increased ESS score and the subjective feeling of sleepiness were
more common among the average group. Sleepiness may negatively impact
academic performance.

The Influence of the Healthy Eating for Life Program on Eating Behaviors of
Nonmetropolitan Congregate Meal Participants

Improved nutrition has the potential to positively influence students academic

performance and behavior.

Improve Nutrition to Increase Brain Function

Deficiencies in other vitamins and minerals, specifically thiamine, vitamin E, vitamin

B, iodine, and zinc, are shown to inhibit cognitive abilities and mental
concentration. Additionally, amino acid and carbohydrate supplementation can
improve perception, intuition, and reasoning

Provide a Balanced Diet for Better Behaviors and Learning Environments

Improvements in nutrition make students healthier, students are likely to have

fewer absences and attend class more frequently

Promote Diet Quality for Positive School Outcomes

Sociologists and economists have looked more closely at the impact of a students
diet and nutrition on academic and behavioral outcomes.
Researchers generally find that a higher quality diet is associated with better
performance on exams and that programs focused on increasing students health also
show modest improvements in students academic test scores

Eating healthy might just save your life

Pickels credits much of his success to the support he's received at the
cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program at Bon Secours Memorial Regional
Medical Center in Mechanicsville, where he still participates in physical therapy
sessions. Nuts, seeds and avocados, as well such fish as salmon and tuna are
rich in the "good" fats -- monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

They really need to look at balance in their eating.

Make healthy choices.

They shouldn't feel like they have to eliminate foods. Just eat more of the good
things.

Every choice you make has an outcome. When your choices for nutrition are
bad, you're going to have health problems.

Lifestyle and academic performance

This research was made with 1767 students (56 % girls and 44 %
boys), aged between 17 and 20, from Cegep LevisLauzon. For
several years, health has become a topic of current interest in
countries where physical inactivity brings up major public health
problems: obesity, type II diabetes and heart diseases, to name a few.
This study is part of this new niche, that of health. Woman, who have
strong feeling of personal efficiency concerning their diet habits,
have higher grades. If we focus on smoking and academic success
both for men and women, there is no relation between smoking and
academic success. There is a relation between physical activity and
good academic results Physical activity is a important factor which
promotes learning, conceration, success and academic integration.
Very few researchers have tried to link body dimensions to academic
results. Concerning physical fitness measurements, most studies
focused on the effect of obesity on academic success, an indicator
that is significantly correlated with lower grades. The level of
consumption was considered as a factor that could result in academic
failure or dropping out. In addition, academic failure was identified as
a factor that could coud result in alcohol consumption. Men or woman
who drink four or more times per week and those who drink four or
more alcohol beverages per week have grades lower than tbe
average.

Healthy Eating and School Performance: An Evidence Summary

Students who are healthy are more likely to be successful in school.
Good nutrition contributes to healthy growth and development, chronic
disease prevention, strong school performance and positive behaviour
among children and youth. Healthy eating are typically characterized by
a variety of foods. The most effective school health programs promote
healthy eating, active living and mental health, partly due to the
relationships between rhese health indicators and school performance.
The relationship between a healthy diet and students academic success
as pointed by student-reported grade averages. Eating breakfast
positively influeces several measures of academic performance,
including short-term cognition, mathematics scores, tests of memort and
creativity and physical endurance. Thw greatest positive impact of
breakfast seems to be on students who are at nutitional risk. Eating too
much food and less-healthy types of food, coupled with low levels of
physical activity can lead to weight gain in children, youth, and adults
alike; however, not eating enough food can also have negative effects
on a childs development, learning capacity and behaviour. A wellbalanced diet that includes a variety of foods throughout the day, in
portion sizes that are appropriate for a childs age and sex can help to
support academic success. There is a relationship between Nutrition and
student behaviour. A students behaviour influences the way in which he
or she is treated by school staff and peers, and ultimately contributes to
academic success. Students who consume breakfast in the morning
have an improved attention span and are less distracted in class.

Nutrition and Students Academic Performance

More than one-third of U.S children were obese. Nearly 20 percent of
Minnesotas 9th and 12th grade students were obese. In addition to obesity,
children also encounter food insecurity, or limited access to food due to an
abesence of money or resources. Recent studies have demonstrated that
nutrition affects students thinking skills, behavior, and health, all factors
that impact academic performance. Free breakfast programs increased the
attendance of students and made their behaviour better. Also, these
programs had a good influence on students academic performances.
Student who participated in a school breakfast program in Massachussets
did better on standardized test than those who did not participate.
Minnesota schools are making great free breakfast program but during
2011-2012 school year they missed more than 53 million dollars in federal
founds. In Minnesota, efforts are underway to improve students access to healthy foods and
support the capacity of school nutrition services programs.
