More than five decades of eld experiance have proven its strength, durabilty and reliably for water and wastewater applica- tions Designed and manufactured to the industy’s most stringent standards, Irontit® ductie iron pipe and Crevet® ductle ion fitings ‘ate suitable forthe most arduous of conditions when handled and installed in accordance with industy recommendations and once instaled can tolerate some of the most demanding operating Conditions, including water hammer, deep trenching, shallow trench- ing wit traffic loading and unstable sol conditions. Irontte® pipe is generally manufactured in standard 5.7 metre effective lengths (may also be supplied in 6m) in diameters ranging {rom DN100 to DN750 in pressure class PN35. Flanged pipe is also availabe in PNG and PN3S on request, ‘The Irontte® duct ion pipe range is supplied with cement mortar lining, including @ bituminous seal coating for sizes ON100 to 'DN300, to maintain water quality in pipelines with low rates of ow. Al Irontte® pipes are supplied with a corosion resistant protective coating of metalic zinc. This coating is applied to the extemal ‘surface ofthe pipe and has the potental to significantly extend the ‘servos ife of the pipeline in certain sail types and conditions, This anodic coating, although not requted by the Australian standard, is ‘key element of EN and ISO ductile iron pipe standards and has ‘been relied upon for many years where these Standards are used, including Europe, the UK and Asia, All pipes are In addition external. ly coated with @ 2-part epoxy resin paint that extends into the pipe sockets a far asthe cement mortar ning. History of ductile iron pipe ‘The strength and durability of ductle's predecessor, grey cast iron pipe is widely recognized. The first offical record ofa Grey ron pipe instalison was in 1455 in Germany. In 1664, the French King Louis XIV ordered the construction of a grey ion pipe main extending 24 kilometres from a pumping station at Mary-on-Seine to Vereiles to ‘supply water to the fountains and town. This pipe served the palace ‘gardens for more than 340 years {Grey iron pipe was introduced tothe United States as early as 1817. Today, more than 611 U.S. utiles have had grey iron distribution ‘mains in continuous service for more than 100 years, Even stronger and tougher than grey iron Ductile iron retains all of grey castiron's attractive qualities, coupled with toughness, and ductility, Although its chemical properties are Simiar to those of grey iron, ductile iron incorporates significant casting refinements, addtional metalugical processes, and super- ‘or quality conto ‘The microstructure of ductile iron differs from grey ion. In ductile iron, the graphite isin the form of spherical nodules rather than flakes (as found in grey ion), thus inhibiting the propagation of cracks and providing the enhanced ductility that gives the alloy its name. The formation of nodules is achieved by the addition of nodulzers, usually magnesium, to molten iron of appropriate ‘composition during manufacture. Oue to its spherical graphite form, Pee Ductile iron has approximately tice the strength of grey iron 3s dotermined by tensile, beam, ring bending, and bursting test. Its impact strength and elongation are many times greater than grey Comparison of metal charscarstie of grey ton adducts on Ductile iron Grey iron [As these photomicrographs show, ductile iron (et) differs from grey iton (right) in that’s graphite is spheroidal, or nodular, instead of the fake form found in grey iron. Ductile ron’s greater strength, ductity, and toughness are due te this change in microstructure, Ductile iron fittings Ductile iron fitings for use with ductile ron, PVC and GRP pressure pipe are manufactured and tested in accordance with Australian ‘Standard ASINZS 2280 “Duele ion pipes and fitings" ‘This standard range of ductle icon fitings incorporates all fitings required for normal water supply systems in sizes DNBO to DN750 with socket, spigot and flanged joints ‘Socketed ductile ion tings are available with either, + Gripite® sockets for Series 2 pipe sizes + Notite® sackets for Series 1 pipe sizes + Standard sockets for Series 2 and Series 1 pipe sizes with adaptor seals ‘Spigoted ductile fitings are compatible with ductile iron sockets of the same nominal size. Ductile iron spigots shall not be used with PVC or GRP pipe sockets Flanges used with ductie iron fitings are normally for water supply ‘and plant work. The pressure ratings for ductile flanges are shown for each table as ether PN16 or PN3S to ASINZS 4087 “Metalic ‘flanges for water works purposes It shouldbe noted that athough ductile iron flanges were in the past, always ful faced, itis now common practice for ductile iron flanges to be raised face. Steel and GRP flanges are normally plain faced ‘and should not be directly mated with a ductile iron raised face unless a spacer flange is used Duct iron fitings are supplied witha polymeric coating to ASINZS 44158 and do not requice additional corrosion protection in natvally ‘occuring sols. Where fitings are supplied with bitumen coating polyethylene ssleeving with adhesive wrapping tape should be spectod. ‘Arange of ductile iron fitings, valves and accessories are available allowing a complete pipeline systom Paget zPLex. Pipelines 1.4 Advantages Throughout Australia and New Zealand, ratte” ductie Iron pipes ‘and Crevel® ductile rn ftings have been chosen forth High strength Ducile iron provides @ pipe with high hoop and axial strength Irontte® pipe can withstand severe stresses caused by heavy ‘extemal sol, trafic, groundwater and construction loads and Internally by operating and high transient pressures, High beam strength Duce ion is recognized foritscapscity to withstend beam loads in ‘above ground instalatons. Corrosion resistance Irentte® duce on pipe #s manufactured with 200g? external metalic zine and 2part epoxy coatings providing increased corrosion pretection, Polyethylene sleeving may be appiled during installation for further enhanced protection in aggressive environ- ments, Some specialist applications may require @ higher level of corrosion pretection such as polyurethane snd or hesvier zine ‘aluminium metalic coatings, For further information and availabity ‘contact plex Fipetines. CCrevet auctle iron ‘tings are supplied with a thermatbonded polymeric coating for igh resistance to corrosion and donctrequi polyethylene sieeving for protection High impact resistance Whilst care should always be taken to minimize the possibilty of ‘damage, Ironie’s® high toughness means itis able to withstand the rigors of on-site hancing in dificult terrain and abnormal service ‘conditions. As sir accumulate, ithas the effect of lessening the effective pipe Gameter, thereby leading to reduced ischarge or increased fiction. Pressure surges of hich macnitude may also fn sir valve is comprised of 2 ouoyant ball confined with an orice to atmosphere at the top and connection tothe pipeine atthe bottom, When the chambers ful of water he bal seals the orfee, but when the pressure crops below atmospheric the bell drops to allow airinto the ine. It emains open unl water refs tne chamber ‘The air periodically released from solution by temperature changes and movements etc, will accumulate in all the peaks of the Pipeline. Therefore even changes in elevation should be laid evenly to grade between peaks to ensure that all possible locations or Potential ar pockets are known. [Ar valves are requied at such peaks to alow gasses to escape arecuelly, avoiding unnecessary pressure surges. In buted instalations, fitings are usualy restrained by ‘concrete anchor blocks, which are cast in sit “These thrust blocks are formed end sized to distribute the applied ferce from the fing to a safe soll pressure at the soilconcrete Interface. The resistance, which can be prowised, wil depend onthe Soll type and depth. Where bends are in the vertical plane with & convex rofl downwards, the weight ofthe concrete anchor block ‘lene may be the restraining ore. ‘Check crawings and specications for size, type and reinforcement requirements. ‘Wpical thrust block configurations.
