Compound Sentences
What are compound sentences?
A compound sentence is a sentence which is made out of 2 simple sentences or
clauses and they are joined by a conjunction.

Example:
The All Blacks scored 100 points and they won the match.
The conjunction is and.
The clauses are how much they scored and that the won the match.

Minor Sentences
What are minor sentences?
Incomplete sentences without verbs

Example:
Century for All Blacks
This sentence does not have a verb.
All Blacks is the subject.

Simple Sentences
What are simple sentences?
A simple sentence is a sentence with a subject and one completed verb.

Example:
The All Blacks won the match.
The subject is All Blacks
The one completes verb is won

Complex Sentences
What are complex sentences?
A complex sentence has one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses.

Example:
The All Blacks won the match although the opposition played valiantly.
The one main clause is although
The subordinate clause is opposition

Compound-Complex sentences
What are compound-complex sentences?
Two or more main clauses and one or more subordinate clauses

Example:
The All Blacks scored 100 points and they won the match although the
opposition played valiantly
The main clauses are All Blacks and opposition.

Imperative Sentences
What are imperative sentences?
An imperative sentence gives a direct command that has been made into a
sentence, not just one word.

Example:
Pass me my bag, will you?
This imperative sentence uses a tag question at the end, will you?

Declarative Sentences
What are declarative sentences?
These are sentences that provide some sort of information.

Example:
We have milk in the fridge

Rhetorical Question
What are Rhetorical Questions?
Rhetorical questions are questions that are asked but don't need an answer to it.
These are usually used in speeches. The answer is revealed in the informatopn
provided.

Example:
Is the pope catholic?
Is the rain wet

Exclamatory Sentences
What are exclamatory sentences?
Exclamatory sentences are sentences that appear forceful in tone. This gives the
audience a feeling of a particular emotion.

Example:
You were meant to be back yesterday
This is a feeling of anger
This puzzle is driving me up the wall
This puzzle is a feeling of frustration

End stopped lines


What are end stopped lines?
They are used in poetry. The line ends using a dash or closing brackets. A colon,
semicolon or full stop can also be used. Punctuation is found at the end.

Enjambment
What is enjambment ?
This type of poetry has no punctuation. One line runs onto the next . It is the
complete opposite to End Stopped Lines.
