Welcome to the Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts 5th

Local Food Trade Show and 2nd Local Specialty Crop Trade Show at
Northeastern University! We are thrilled that you are joining us today
to learn, network and trade.
Local food is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in
Massachusetts, but it only represents a fraction of all food purchased
and eaten in Massachusetts and across New England and the nation. In
an effort to increase the volume of food eaten by New Englanders that
is grown in New England, SBN has joined with other local food groups
to promote a New England campaign--`50 By 60. This campaigns
mission is to do all we can to ensure that 50% of all food eaten in New
England is sourced in New England by 2060. We are proud to be a part
of this important initiative and our Trade Shows are moving us all in
this positive direction.
The Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts Boston Local Food
Program, a recognized Buy Local Group, is committed to driving this
transformation, one eater at a time. Through programs and events
like the Local Food Trade Show, the annual Boston Local Food Festival,
Hyper Local and Local Craft Brewfests and more, SBN is joining other
passionate local food groups across the state, region and nation in
making this shift a reality.
We could not do this work without the generous and continuous
support of our sponsors, our partners, our buyers, and our food
producers. Thank you for your participation in transforming our local
food system; and a special thank you to Northeastern University for
their generous use of this space and in-kind support.
Today, we hope you meet new friends, form new connections, learn
new strategies, and discover ways to do more business with forwardthinking local companies. Please remember that SBN is a resource for
you and your business as we all work to grow and strengthen our local
food system. We invite you to join SBN as we work together to build a
strong local food system!
Sustainably Yours,
Laury Hammel, SBN Executive Director

Does Local Matter? . Room 318

The concept of local foods is not new but revived consumer interest
and the booming local food production and marketing in recent years
reveal one thing: local foods are coming to the marketplace more
readily than ever before. This panel will look at the present, as well as
the future of marketing local food and seafood, the who, what and why
consumers choose local products, what local means to them, how
local is a marketing strategy and the economic impact that buying
local has. Learn how connecting to your community can be leveraged
in your efforts to increase sales, visibility and your business overall
success.
Facilitator: Ali Berlow, author of The Food Activist Handbook
