To make the top look thicker and add an
interesting edge prolile. Iglued a separate
molding frame on topofrhe case first. Then
Iglued the top to this frame,
MOIJ)ING FR."-"' To make the molding
frame. start by resa wing enough l'2"-thick
stock for a front, back (both S). and two
side (T) pieces, see l'ig. 19.Then rip th~
pieces to a uniform width 0121-1s".
Before mitering the pieces to length. rout
a W' round-over (with an I-Is" shoulder) on
the bottom edge. see Fig. 19a.TIl"" miter
the pieces to length so they're IV." longer
(long-point 10 longpoint) than the width and
depth of the case (271'." and 11v..'~.
After the frame piecesarecut, screw them
down to UICtop of the case so there's a uniform overhang on all four sides. (ln my case,
the oYel'nang measured 'III".)
TOr FRA."E. Now work can begin on the
lrame and panel top. To make the frame,
start by cutting enough :y,"thick stock for a
front, back (both U). and two side (V)
pieces. see Fig. 20. Then rip tile pieces to a
uniform ",idth 012\1,".
Before cutting the pieces to length there
are a numoorof routing steps to go through.
see Fig. 2L First. rout a \14" round-over (with
a shoulder) on the top edge of each piece.
see Step I.
Next. to create a decorative channel between Ute frame and the plywood panel. I
routed a very small rabbet on the inside top
corner of each frame piece. see Slep 2.
To keep the frame pieces and plywood
panel aligned, I used a spline cut from V,"
Masonite, see Fig. 20. To accept the spline in
the Imme pieces. Irouted \I," slots on the
inside edges. see Step 3 in Fig. 21.
After routing Ute Slots, miter the four
frame pieces (U,V) to length so they're V4"
longer (long-point to longpoint) than the
molding frame.
